It wasn’t the result we all wanted, but there were definitely some positives to take away from Saturday’s game.

The Oilers fell 4-3 to the Calgary Flames in overtime, bringing their Penticton tournament record to 1-0-1.
Let’s look at the Oilersnation’s Player of the Game, as well as some other key points.

Does this kid ever have a wicked shot?
On Saturday evening, the 20-year-old Russian scored a goal (his first) and an assist (his second), as he was the only multi-point getter for the Oilers. Not just that, but he absolutely sniped a one-timer just underneath the bar for style points.

Last season with the North Bay Battalion, Petrov scored 27 goals and 93 points in 65 games. The year prior, he hit the 40-goal mark in 63 games.
What an absolute steal of a sixth-round pick, and it’ll be fun to see how he adjusts to the American Hockey League next season.

Xavier Bourgault finally got on the score sheet, but that doesn’t tell the whole story of just how well he played on Saturday. The 20-year-old right-shot centre was zipping around the ice, showcasing his great speed and hands. Last season with the Bakersfield Condors, he scored 13 goals and 34 points in 62 games.

Brady Stonehouse was the invitee that impressed the most on Saturday, scoring his first goal of the tournament. Last season with the Ottawa 67’s (my home team), he scored 37 goals and 57 points in 68 games.

Carl Berglund scored the other goal, redirecting the puck with pretty nifty foot movement. Zlatan Ibrahimović recently retired, so I wonder if Berglund could replace him as Sweden’s star striker, while also playing for the Condors.

Beau Akey didn’t get on the score sheet at all, but man has he ever been impressive in these two games. On one particular play, he showed a great stick to break up an opportunity for the Flames, then proceeded to shake the forecheck and make a good outlet pass, before joining the rush. Despite the loss, the Oilers haven’t lost in regulation at the tournament since 2013. They’ve gone 18 straight games without losing in regulation time. That is a crazy streak to uphold, even if it looked like it could’ve been broken on Saturday.
The power play was better than it was on Friday. As you may know, the Oilers went one for eight on the power play against the Jets. While they still had eight power plays, all three of their goals came on the man advantage. Now if they could stop taking penalties…
The Oilers third and final game will take place on Monday at 3:30 PM MT against the Vancouver Canucks. Hopefully, they can maintain their streak!
