Eight current and former members of the Edmonton Oilers have been named to the Canadian Hockey League’s top 50 players of all-time list.
It isn’t a finalized list, however, as the league has opened a fan vote running through March 10th, which will allow fans to select their own top 10 CHL players of all-time.
The former and current Oilers to make the list all span various times in the NHL:
- Paul Coffey, Defenceman (OHL, Kingston Canadians, Soo Greyhounds & Kitchener Rangers, 1977-90)
- Wayne Gretzky, Forward (OHL, Peterborough Petes & Soo Greyhounds – 1977-78)
- Grant Fuhr, Goaltender (WHL, Victoria Cougars – 1979-81)
- Chris Pronger, Defenceman (OHL, Peterborough Petes – 1991-93)
- Corey Perry, Forward (OHL, London Knights – 2001-05)
- Taylor Hall, Forward (OHL, Windsor Spitfires – 2007-10)
- Connor McDavid, Forward (OHL, Erie Otters – 2012-15)
- Leon Draisaitl, Forward (WHL, Prince Albert Raiders & Kelowna Rockets – 2012-15)
Gretzky was the first to enter the Ontario league, then called the OMJHL, late in the 1976-77 season, playing three games for the Peterborough Petes, scoring three assists in three games. He would spend the 1977-78 season with the Soo Greyhounds, where he scored a staggering 70 goals and 182 points, before turning pro the next season with the WHA’s Indianapolis Racers and later, the Edmonton Oilers.
Coffey’s first season in the OMJHL came in 1978-79, playing eight games for the Kingston Canadians, scoring two goals and four points in eight games. He would land with the Greyhounds the next season, playing a season and a half before he joined the Kitchener Rangers. Across 151 games in the league, he scored 48 goals and 195 points in 151 games. Coffey was drafted by the Oilers sixth overall in the 1980 draft.
Fuhr, meanwhile, was getting his feet wet in the Western Hockey League, spending the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons with the Victoria Rangers. He would appear in 102 games for them over the two seasons, posting a .911 save percentage in his first year and a .908 in his second year, with a 78-21-1 record that spanned both seasons. He was drafted by the Oilers eighth overall in 1981.
Pronger would spend his brief OHL tenure of two years with the Petes between 1991-92 and 1992-93, scoring 32 goals and 139 point in 124 games. Drafted second overall by the Hartford Whalers, he would also play for the St. Louis Blues, Anaheim Ducks, Philadelphia Flyers and the Oilers.

Perry will likely be near the top of the finalized top 50 after a wild four year run with the London Knights, scoring 140 goals and 380 points in 253 games. His best season was his last, scoring 47 goals and 130 points in 60 games in 2004-05, helping the Knights with the OHL championship, and the Memorial Cup, after being drafted 28th overall by the Anaheim Ducks two years prior.
Hall had a legendary three-year career with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires before being drafted first overall by the Oilers in the 2010 draft. He debuted in the 2007-08 season scoring 45 goals and 94 points in 63 games, and didn’t slow down there with 38 goals and 90 points in 63 games his second year, and 40 goals and 106 points in 57 games in his third year. He helped the Spits not only win back-to-back OHL championships in his final two years, but Memorial Cup championships, too, getting named tournament MVP both times. Despite a Hart Trophy win for his 2017-18 season with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, he’s yet to meet such heights during his NHL career. He spent six years with the Oilers, four with the Devils, and has had stints with the Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Arizona Coyotes.
McDavid spent three seasons with the OHL’s Erie Otters between 2012-13 and 2014-15, bursting on the scene with 25 goals and 66 points in 63 games in his rookie season. He’d add 28 goals and 99 points in 56 games in his second year, and 44 goals and 120 points in 47 games in his third and final season. His Otters would never achieve the team success, he would help Canada win Gold at the 2015 World Juniors.
Draisaitl’s rise through the junior ranks was nothing short of meteoric. He joined the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders in 2012-13 after being selected in the import draft, and had a solid, yet unspectacular 21 goals and 58 points in 64 games. In his draft year, however, he would double his point total, scoring 38 goals and 105 points in 64 games, subsequently finding himself drafted third overall by the Oilers in the 2014 draft. He’d debut with the Oilers the following year, playing 37 games scoring two goals and nine points, before being sent back to the WHL, joining the Kelowna Rockets in a trade. He’d rack up 19 goals and 53 points in 32 games, helping them win the WHL championship.
