As the @Edmonton Oilers gauge their plans for this year’s trade deadline, reports are surfacing the team has looked into @Montreal Canadiens F @Tomas Tatar.
The report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was apart of this weekly 31 thoughts column.
I think the Oilers have, at the very least, looked into Tomas Tatar. (Pittsburgh would be another team with interest.) GM Ken Holland knows him very well. Again, though, Montreal feels injuries derailed its season and wants to be competitive in 2020-21. So you’ve really got to move the needle to get the Canadiens’ attention. Sportsnet.ca.
Tatar, 29, was acquired by the Habs from the @Vegas Golden Knights as part of a deal for @Max Pacioretty. The left-shooting Czech has been a big part of the engine that drives the Canadiens offence in the last two years scoring 45-53—108 in 135 games played.
This year he is likely to smash career highs and is on pace for 74 points.
According to Puckpedia, Tatar and his $5.3-million cap have one year left with him becoming a UFA after last season. Logistically the money would be tough in a trade given Edmonton only has about $675k in cap space ahead of the trade deadline.
Tatar has posted incredibly strong underlying 5v5 numbers with the Canadiens and would be an immediate boost to the Oilers top six.
