The Oilers sent a squad with some NHL regulars but no Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl to Vancouver to face the Canucks and lost by a score of 5-2. Adam Erne and Raphael Lavoie scored Edmonton’s two goals while Stuart Skinner allowed five goals on 28 shots in the loss.

Things worth mentioning…

  • The Oilers carried the play through much of the first period and they got out to a 1-0 lead with just over one minute left in the frame. Mattias Janmark carried the puck into Vancouver’s zone and Adam Erne parked on the doorstep and buried the rebound past Thatcher Demko. Erne is in training camp on a professional tryout and that’s a good way to make an impression.
  • The Canucks scored a couple of goals in the second period to pull ahead and then their power-play took over in the third frame. Andrei Kuzmenko scored while Brandon Sutter was in the box, Elias Pettersson scored while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was off for cross-checking, and Phil DiGuiseppe scored while Evan Bouchard was penalized.
  • The Oilers made the score 5-2 in the third period off of a snipe from Raphael Lavoie. There was some really good work on this play by defenceman Philip Broberg to break the puck out of Edmonton’s zone and up the ice and that shot by Lavoie was big-league calibre. There’s been a lot of talk this pre-season about Lavoie and his playing time, the more highlights he puts out like this, the harder it’ll be to sneak him through waivers. There are many teams out there who would love to take a gamble on Lavoie’s talent.
  • The Oilers will be back in action on Monday when they head to Seattle to play the Kraken. They’ll host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday and the Kraken on Friday to wrap up the pre-season.
