GDB 81.0 Wrap Up: Canucks @ Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers couldn’t have finished this last game in Rexall Place any better. In the traditional Oiler way, they didn’t get their first shot on net until ten minutes in. Six goals later, the Oilers gave the fans something to be proud of and smile about walking out of Rexall Place forever. Final Score: 6-2.
BOO BAGGEDMILK is what I said when he asked me to cover the wrap up for him. While Baggedmilk and the rest of the Nation personalities are drinking any Rexall Beer the building has to offer, I am taking one for the team by covering my first wrap up. I would tell you to go easy on me but you know what? Show me your worst.
I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous the Oilers were going to blow this game and leave all of Rexall Place grumpy and bitter, forcing the fans to sit through a 90 minute post game ceremony. As usual I couldn’t be more wrong, and the Oilers kicked ass.
I’ve gotta give props where props are due. The staff behind the Edmonton Oilers last game at Rexall Place did an incredible job. I can’t even imagine the logistics of putting this all together. From Oh Canada to the final minute of the game, I pretty much had goosebumps the whole two and a half hours. To top it off, the Oilers couldn’t have skated the Canucks further into the ground.
If anybody is wondering about the Farewell Rexall Ceremony, Baggedmilk will be giving his own wrap up on it tomorrow, so stay tuned. Tonight we are saying goodbye to the second oldest arena in the league. I can’t believe it’s over.
In the words of Gene Principe, “that’s rex-all, folks!” Now, we wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • I really enjoyed Gene Principe’s opening skit giving us a tour of Rexall Place behind the scenes. I can’t wait for what Gene will have in store for us next year in Rogers Arena.
  • The Paul Lorieau clip singing the anthem couldn’t have been any more nostalgic. Got shivers listening to it again, nothing can beat it.
  • “I get goosebumps even talking about it” – Bob Cole on how awesome Connor McDavid is and will be. I’m so glad Bob Cole came back and called this game. No one can do it better than Bob. He got so excited every time Connor touched the puck, it was awesome!
  • Zack Kassian’s roughing penalty for standing up for Taylor Hall in the first period was well deserved. Nice to see it from him even when the games don’t matter.
  • Yakupov sniped another lazer top corner tonight. You gotta expect that to be his last goal as an Oiler. We’ll miss you and your energy, Yak.
  • The Oilers PK went 4/4 and looked really solid tonight. Granted the Canucks’ Powerplay was 2 for 42 coming into this game.
  • After a questionable first period, you have to love how the boys stepped up for the fans in the last two periods, making the overpriced tickets well worthwhile.
  • Talbot had a really strong game tonight as usual. He looked really square, and knew where every puck was coming from. The two goals against weren’t his fault.
  • Connor McDavid continues to pad his stats with another three point night, making an even bigger bid for the Calder. If he doesn’t win it I’m driving my Nissan Sentra into the North Saskatchewan. #ConnorForCalder
  • Patty Maroon scored twice on a snipe and nice deflection. He now has 13 points in 15 games with the Oilers.
  • Taylor Hall’s Beard game has never been stronger. Oh, and nice goal too!
  • Kudos to the Oilers for having Walter Gretzky being the final Oiler being recognized in Rexall tonight. Goosebumps, AGAIN.
  • As far as I could tell, the linesmen had a nice bounceback game tonight and went 100% in their calls.
  • THE FACE PALMERS
  • The first period wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good. It took the Oilers ten minutes to get their first shot, and it was on the powerplay. They seemed pretty cautious and a little nervous. I wouldn’t want to embarrass myself in front of 100 + Oiler alumni in the either.
  • BM NOTE: I love Baggedmilk. He’s my hero and best friend. I feel honoured to have been asked to fill in for him as he drinks beer and watches the closing ceremonies.
  • This is no different from any other game but Mark Fayne got robbed by the refs AGAIN in the first period, getting a penalty for lifting Daniel Sedin’s stick.
  • Darnell Nurse took a deflection up high in the first period and didn’t return to the game. The injury jinx strikes again.
