The Edmonton Oilers’ parent organization, OEG Sports and Entertainment, announced Wednesday that it is making organizational changes, including the hiring of longtime sports executive Hugh Weber as chief executive officer.

Weber takes over the role from Jürgen Schreiber, who will transition to a new role with TS Retail Enterprises under the OEG brand. His arrival in Edmonton comes with 25 years of “senior leadership experience across professional sports, entertainment, venues, and major development initiatives,” OEG said in a statement.

Most recently, Weber served as the president of the MLS’ Seattle Sounders FC and NWSL’s Seattle Reign FC, with previous president experience with Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, whose portfolio includes the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and the Prudential Center, while working earlier for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.

Weber will work with many brands under the OEG brand, including the Oilers, the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings, Rogers Place, the ICE District, as well as “live entertainment and event operations, media and content, and the continued development of ICE District.”

“We have built OEGSE into one of North America’s leading sports and entertainment organizations, with an exceptional foundation and significant opportunities ahead,” said Oilers owner Daryl Katz, who is the founder and chairman of OEG . “Hugh is a proven leader who understands how to build high-performing organizations, bring teams and businesses together and create exceptional experiences for fans, partners and communities. I am confident he is the right person to lead OEGSE into its next decade.”

Schreiber joined OEG in 2016, and in his new role, will “continue to support select strategic initiatives, including the Edmonton Event Park project, and will work closely with Weber to ensure a seamless transition,” OEG’s statement read.

“Jürgen has provided strong leadership, delivered meaningful results and positioned OEGSE well for its next chapter, and I am grateful for his contributions,” added Katz.
