Five minutes into the game, the Blackhawks took the lead thanks to Teuvo Teräväinen firing it home in the slot past Calvin Pickard.
With five minutes left in the first period, Nick Foligno capitalized on a wild bounce, beating Pickard to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead.
Less than 30 seconds into the second period, Viktor Arvidsson made a nice pass behind the net to get it out front to Vasily Podkolzin, who made no mistake in scoring his fifth goal of the season.
Midway through the second period, Ryan Donato fired it in past a screened Calvin Pickard from the slot to give the Blackhawks a 3-1 lead. Thankfully, this seemed to wake up the Oilers though.
With about four minutes left in the period, Adam Henrique tipped Podkolzin’s shot from the point to get it past Arvid Söderblom for his sixth goal of the season. He’s been hot lately, as he has now scored three goals in his last three games.
Less than two minutes later, the Oilers tied the game as Corey Perry brought the puck out to the middle of the slot and fired it past the Blackhawks’ netminder for his seventh goal of the season. Who says depth scoring doesn’t exist for the Oilers?
The Oilers scored the game-winning goal on the first power play of the game, as Zach Hyman banged in a loose rebound to give the Oilers a 4-3 lead. He primarily played with Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins this game, and it’s nice to see him get back on track.
Takeaways…
For the second consecutive game, the Oilers started slow, allowing the first two goals. Unlike Thursday, they were able to overcome the deficit as they eventually tied the game late in the second period. It’s not ideal to fall behind non-playoff teams, but at least they got the win.
Depth scoring came in clutch in this game, as Vasily Podkolzin, Adam Henrique, and Corey Perry all got on the board in this game. Leon Draisaitl picked up two assists, one on Podkolzin’s goal and one on Hyman’s goal.
Connor McDavid was held off the score sheet for the third time in four games. Ironically, the Oilers have won the three games that he didn’t pick up a point in while his three assists against Pittsburgh saw them lose that one.
Calvin Pickard didn’t have a great game, allowing three goals on 22 shots for an .864 save percentage. He played better as he got into the game and even made some big saves in the final minute when the Oilers were on the penalty kill, but he has to do better than this.
In the second game of the season, the Oilers embarrassingly fell 5-2 to the Blackhawks. It’s nice to see them get their win back, but the Oilers have to play better against bad teams. Up next, the Oilers return home to face the Los Angeles Kings before another three-game road trip.
