If you’re an Edmonton Oilers fan who’s glued to the internet, you may have heard that the team could’ve drafted Jesper Wallstedt in 2021.
Fans of the team have been reminded of it repeatedly over the past few weeks, as the young goaltender has had a strong start to his early NHL career for the Minnesota Wild, posting a 10-3-2 record, five shutouts, a .924 save percentage and a 2.29 goals against average in his first 15 starts.
On Tuesday night, the Wild were in Edmonton and would shut out the Oilers 1-0 with Wallstedt earning the victory. Following that was the reaction online to how Wallstedt could’ve been playing for the Edmonton Oilers.
It makes me sick Wahlstedt is on the Wild when he should be an Oiler. And the nickname the Wall of St Paul is so good it hurts. – Ryan Whitney via X
Insert “Edmonton could’ve used a guy like him tonight” comment. – Mike Bartner via X
I’m not even kidding Wallstedt might be the best goalie in the league. – Busch Wookie via X
You gotta draft and develop goalies like Wallstedt. – Don Blake via X
The LAST thing the vibes around the Oilers need is getting goalies by Jesper Wallstedt. It might happen but I’m here for the Oilers potting 4-5 past him tonight! – OriginalPouzar via X
The “best” parts are: a) Wallstedt was the best goalie in the draft b) Bourgault was projected to be a early to mid second round pick c) Dallas took Wyatt Johnson 23rd overall d) Bourgault is now in the Senators system while Muezenberger went back to Germany Utter failure. – Morgan Laidler via X
THE GREAT WALL OF ST. PAUL SHUTS OUT THE TEAM THAT TRADED AWAY THE PICK THEY COULD’VE USED TO DRAFT HIM! DIDN’T WANT HIM AND NOW THEY WISH THEY HAD HIM. 4 SHUTOUTS IN 10 STARTS! JEPSER WALLSTEDT IS HIM! – Brett Marshall via X
It’s okay, the Oilers always lose to an AHL goalie that was recently called up. – BouchardBeliever via X
YES Wallstedt got the shutout. Hyman had 2 chances and could have chipped them and reversed the play. He chips one of those he scores. 97 won’t shoot the puck. Not enough shots through. Still too much perimeter. As good as the Minny goalie was the Oilers offense (sic) bad. – OilDoug972993 via X
our own draft pick. we got shut out by the dude who was taken with OUR DRAFT PICK. I’m so tired man. – Oscar_klefmeme via Instagram
What’s to say. Ken Holland passed on a franchise goaltender for a player that will probably never see the NHL. Could be the worst decision in the McDavid era. – Law.ed.shy via Instagram
While Wallstedt earned the shutout, the Oilers themselves didn’t do themselves any favours by not scoring a single goal. For a team that’s known for offence, not scoring a single goal isn’t ideal, even with Jack Roslovic out of the lineup. And while fans pointed fingers at Stuart Skinner for the lone goal, he allowed only one goal. Fortunately, others found silver linings from last night’s loss.
The only goal scored wasn’t Stu’s fault. A shot off the draw and a screen. He made alot of terrific saves. The offense (sic) needs to pepper the net, stop trying to make the perfect play. Shoot the damn puck. – Dion Pryor via Facebook
Team can’t score when Skinner plays good. Team scores when Skinner plays bad. Typical for this team. Not in sync with each other at all this year. – Shane Heise via Facebook
It was a great game. They ran into the wall of St Paul who now has shut outs in 4 of the last six. The Wall has been amazing for Minne. Our boys played hard- and ran into a hot goalie. – Nadine Rae via Facebook
Well you can’t win if you don’t score, unfortunately we ran into a hot goalie. It just sucks that it was against a goalie we could have potentially drafted, but who really knows what would’ve happened even if we did draft him. But a couple games in row that Stu has been good and we’ve played better defensively, so hopefully those parts continue to happen. – Colton Kudera via Facebook.
Skinner and the defense (sic) especially Ekholm and Bouchard played really good. They need to get more scoring from every forward… – Deejay.dj via Instagram
Best overall team game they played all year. Keep at it! – Doorsdonenow via Instagram
When McDavid had a clear lane to the net to shoot high glove after skating past everyone, but instead passed it off to Hyman who’s already well covered, I knew the shutout was happening. – Thecanehdiansteve via Instagram
Next day thoughts: oilers fans only know how to blame a goalie when we lose, regardless of his SV or the final score, it could never be anyone else’s fault except the goalies right??? – Isaac_2_6 via Instagram
Good chance in the 2nd. Hyman still getting up to speed. Looked like Minnesota had Backstrom in net during his incredible run against the Oil. – Mr. Frank Hegel via X
Oilers played well. Just couldn’t get through the brick wall. Could have been worse. Onto Thursday’s game. – JennaY95297 via X
It would’ve helped if McDavid had more than 1 shot on net which came during the last 5 minutes of the third. – Vivek Kalia via X
Next up for the Edmonton Oilers, the Seattle Kraken visit Rogers Place on Thursday at 7 pm.
