Leon Draisaitl has officially hit 1000 career points.
The point came against Draisaitl’s former goaltender in Stuart Skinner, as the Edmonton Oilers faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night. It came early in the game and on the power play, in fitting fashion, as Draisaitl picked up a secondary assist on a Zach Hyman goal.
Draisaitl is the first German player in NHL history to hit the 1000-point milestone. Achieving the feat in 824 games, he becomes the fifth-fastest player born outside North America to reach the mark, behind Peter Stastny (682 GP), Jari Kurri (716 GP), Jaromir Jagr (763 GP), and Nikita Kucherov (809 GP), besting Penguins skater Evgeni Malkin, who achieved the feat in 848 games. Overall, he’s the 21st player born outside North America and 103rd NHLer to hit 1,000 points.
The fifth Oiler to hit the milestone, Draisaitl now sits 34 points back from tying Mark Messier for fourth on Edmonton’s all-time points leaders list. Ahead of them are Jari Kurri (1043 points) in third, Connor McDavid (1133 points) in second, and of course, Wayne Gretzky (1669 points) leading the list. Draisaitl also sits just one goal back from tying Glenn Anderson’s 417 career tucks for third on the franchise’s all-time goalscoring list.
He also became the sixth player in NHL history to record his 1000th point against a former teammate, joining Henrik Sedin (Jan. 20, 2017 against Roberto Luongo), Rod Brind’Amour (Nov. 4, 2006 against Martin Gerber), Phil Housley (Nov. 8, 1997 against Curtis Joseph), Bernie Federko (March 19, 1988 against Mike Liut) and Bryan Trottier (Jan. 29, 1985 against Roland Melanson).
Draisaitl hits the marker amidst another dominant season offensively, with 17 goals and 43 points in 33 games entering Tuesday night. He’s now on pace for a fifth consecutive 100-point season, already making good use of his new eight-year, $112 million contract that kicked in this season. His strong numbers were a key factor in helping propel the team to back-to-back Cup Final finishes over the last two seasons, and he’ll continue to be a driving force as Edmonton looks to overcome that final hurdle this spring.
Before that, Draisaitl is set to make his Olympic debut this February, as NHLers return to the marquee tournament for the first time since 2014. Draisaitl was among six players named to Team Germany back in June, with the full roster set to come out soon. At his last international appearance at the World Championships in 2019, Draisaitl had five goals and eight points in eight games.
