The NHL Draft Lottery may be a poor substitute for playoff hockey, but for the last decade it is pretty much all that fans of the Edmonton Oilers have had to cheer for.
However, while the on-ice results have not been kind to Edmonton, the off-ice ones certainly have. Four times in the last six years, the Oilers have won the draft lottery and the right to select first overall; at this point, the team is basically a lottery dynasty.
On Saturday night, the team tries to #MakeItFive.

Draft Odds

The teams enter the lottery with the following chances of landing the first overall pick:
  • Toronto Maple Leafs: 20.0%
  • Edmonton Oilers: 13.5%
  • Vancouver Canucks: 11.5%
  • Columbus Blue Jackets: 9.5%
  • Calgary Flames: 8.5%
  • Winnipeg Jets: 7.5%
  • Arizona Coyotes: 6.5%
  • Buffalo Sabres: 6.0%
  • Montreal Canadiens: 5.0%
  • Colorado Avalanche: 3.5%
  • New Jersey Devils: 3.0%
  • Ottawa Senators: 2.5%
  • Carolina Hurricanes: 2.0%
  • Boston Bruins: 1.0%
It isn’t just the first overall pick up for grabs, though. The second and third overall picks will also be selected via the lottery, which means that the Oilers could fall as low as fifth overall in these standings.

Live Blog

Lottery coverage kicks off on CBC at 5 P.M. MT, at which point we’ll start updating this page. For now, some words of wisdom from the one and only Connor McDavid:
  • Things I’m thinking right now: I’m really glad I decided to live-blog this next hour before we actually get to the lottery.
  • Will I watch John C. McGinley in anything? Absolutely, including Speed Stick commercials.
  • If they ever do a biopic of Michael Mosley‘s life, I would totally buy Auston Matthews playing him as a younger man.
  • Obligatory Patrick Laine Skype joke.
  • If any NHL general manager in attendance tonight publicly admits to *not* bringing a lucky item with him to the Draft Lottery, I will happily send him $100 to support his ongoing fight against superstition.
  • I want it known that my wife made this joke before Marek did:
  • Marc Bergevin with no lucky charms! Email me for your cash, Marc.
  • Marc Bergevin has also spun the draft lottery simulator zero times. My personal hero.
  • Just four No. 1 overall picks since the draft lottery was introduced have won Stanley Cups. So if when Edmonton wins the lottery and if when Edmonton wins the Cup that number could more than double.

The Results

Finally, we have results.
  • 14. Boston. The Bruins don’t move up.
  • 13. Carolina. Ditto for the Hurricanes; too bad, they’re dying for talent.
  • 12. Ottawa. No advance for the Sens, either.
  • 11. New Jersey. Wow, four-for-four, no changes yet.
  • 10. Colorado. Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic can’t catch a break.
  • 9. Montreal. Guess Bergevin should’ve brought a lucky charm.
  • 8. Buffalo. No redemption for Tim Murray after missing out on McDavid last year.
  • 7. Arizona. If they’d won that would have been some kind of crazy.
  • 6. Calgary. The Flames fall one spot; Winnipeg will finish in the top-three.
  • 5. Vancouver. The Canucks fall; Columbus has one of the other three spots.
  • 4. Edmonton. The Oilers end up slipping one spot, and somehow avoid winning the lottery. Still, it is two spots up on Calgary. The bad news is it means the Oilers aren’t likely to have a shot at either Finnish right wing.
  • 3. Columbus. That’s one Finn for Jarmo Kekalainen. It also guarantees a Canadian team will win the first overall pick.
  • 2. Winnipeg. Winnipeg climbs four spots.
  • 1. Toronto. They finished in last place, and they land the first overall pick. Auston Matthews, Maple Leaf. Edmonton, incidentally, finished one point ahead of the Leafs in the NHL standings this year.
