The Edmonton Oilers released their rookie camp roster on Monday with several invitees and draft picks set to attend.
But so will some other newcomers, like 20-year-old Matthew Savoie, who the Oilers acquired this past offseason.
Eight Oilers draftees will be coming to camp: goaltender Nathaniel Day, defencemen Beau Akey and Max Wanner, and forwards Connor Clattenburg, William Nicholl, Sam O’Reilly, Matvey Petrov, and Dalyn Wakely. Of the group, multiple 2024 draftees will get their first taste of wearing Oilers colours in Clattenburg, Nicholl, O’Reilly and Wakely.
Before select players get invited to the Oilers’ main training camp, the annual Young Stars tournament will take place this weekend. They take on the Canucks rookies on Friday at 8:30 PM MST, the Flames rookies Saturday night at the same time, and the Jets rookies Monday at Noon.
The team has extended quite a few invites to camp. Three forwards, Brayden Boehm (WHL, Medicine Hat), Vincent Desjardins (QMJHL, Blainville-Boisbraind) and Jesse Heslop (WHL, Everett) will all attend camp.
Boehm, 20, has spent the last four years with the Tigers, scoring 31 goals and 69 points in 150 games. The 5’11, 187 lb. left-shot forward only played a dozen games last year, however, scoring five goals and five assists before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Desjardins, 18, just wrapped up his first full year of Major Junior hockey, scoring 15 goals and 47 points in 69 games. He played 14 games during the 2022-23 season, scoring four goals and seven points, so the 5’11, 165 lb. increase had a nice increase in his production.
Hesslop, also 18, just finished his second season in the WHL, scoring 19 goals, 35 assists and 54 points in 61 games, notching career highs in all categories. Elite Prospects calls him “a play-builder,” who is a shifty player that “supports all of his team’s plays and disrupts a ton going going back the other way.”
On the blue line, six of eight players at camp were invited: Nate Corbet (WHL, Medicine Hat), Hyde Davidson (WHL, Seattle), Marc Lajoie (WHL, Edmonton), Frankie Marrelli (OHL, Ottawa), Rhys Pederson (WHL, Edmonton) and Pier-Oliver Roy (QMJHL, Victoriaville) will all be at camp.
Corbet, 18, is a native of Mannheim, Germany, having played all his hockey in North America. The 6’2, 170 lb. left-shot just finished his first season in the WHL, scoring three goals and five points in 51 games. He has NHL bloodlines with his father, Rene. He played eight years and 362 NHL games with the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, and Pittsburgh Penguins, winning the Stanley Cup in Colorado in 1995-96.
Davidson, 18, is a hometown player who just wrapped up his second season with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds. The 6’2, 170 lb. left-shot scored five assists in 50 games.
Lajoie, 21, finished up a solid WHL career last year with the Edmonton Oil Kings, joining the Bakersfield Condors on a professional tryout, playing one game. His final season in the Dub saw the towering 6’6, 223 lb. rearguard score 26 goals and 58 points in 68 games. He’s set to join the University of Alberta Golden Bears this season.
Marrelli, 18, is a player our own prospect guru Bruce Curlock tweeted is “the player to watch” among camp invites. The 5’11 left-shot had a strong second season with the Ottawa 67’s, scoring nine goals and 25 points in 60 games.
Pederson, 18, stands at 6’4, 194 lbs., just finishing his second season with the Oil Kings. He scored two goals and 12 points in 50 games, with Elite Prospects calling him “a a sturdy, play-killing defenceman who flashes skill in open ice.”
Lastly, Roy, 20, just wrapped up his fourth season in the Q, playing for the Victoriaville Tigers. He’s got offensive flash, scoring 10 goals and 50 points in 66 games last year, and six goals and 68 points in 68 games the year prior. Despite that, Elite Prospects describes him as a player who “shuts down puck carriers between the blue lines, closing on them with urgency,” with an ability to move the puck “with effective, short passes.”
