The Ottawa Senators will have to navigate life without their captain for up to two months as Brady Tkachuk underwent surgery to repair a right thumb injury.
Tkachuk left Monday’s 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators partway through the third period. While the team initially hoped surgery wouldn’t be required, a second opinion proved otherwise.
The 26-year-old had appeared in three games for the Senators prior to the injury, notching three assists and 10 shots on goal. His injury comes at a tumultuous time for the Sens, who got off to an 0-4 start to their season before beating the Seattle Kraken 4-3 in a shootout Thursday night.
Tkachuk has appeared in 515 games for the Senators since being drafted fourth overall in the 2018 draft by the team. He debuted the following season putting up 22 goals and 45 points in 71 games. Across his eight years with the team, he’s put up 191 goals and 407 points, and four goals and seven points in six playoff games.

Other news and notes…

  • Despite a solid start to the season for the Detroit Red Wings, going 3-1 heading into Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, questions have emerged about the long-term future of some of their veteran players. That’s thanks to the emergence of three young defencemen — Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson — leaving Erik Gustafsson and Travis Hamonic hoping to either crack the lineup, or get moved elsewhere, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported.
  • Dustin Wolf’s rookie season was nothing short of tremendous, posting a 29-16-8 record, a .910 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average for the Calgary Flames. It saw him finish second in Calder Trophy voting, as well as him earning a seven-year, $7.5-million AAV extension. But early this season, teh same level of success hasn’t been replicated. A 1-3 record, a .873 save percentage and a 3.77 GAA are far from the numbers they were last year — though Daily Faceoff analyst and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton isn’t concerned. “Dustin Wolf is a product of a team that overachieved last year… I don’t think it’s concerning yet, because they’re a team that’s not as good as you want them to be. They’re still in a rebuild phase, they have a few pieces, but I’m not totally concerned.”
