Evgeni Malkin is staying in Pittsburgh.
“Best city, best fans. I stay one more year. Bingo,” Malkin said
in a video released by the Penguins on Tuesday, after signing his new one-year contract. “Best day of my life, yeah?”
There were questions whether Malkin would return this offseason, but the two parties have officially reached an agreement that keeps the Russian forward around another year.
The contract carries a salary of $5.5 million, but according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “The contract could go up to $9 million if he hits all bonuses.”
The bonuses include: $500,000 for a certain number of games played, $1 million for playoff qualification, and another $500,000 for every playoff round won.
Malkin was allegedly open to playing for another team as the 2025-26 season finished, as his future in the Steel City was uncertain. However, two weeks ago, talks began between the two sides, and now Malkin won’t have to think about donning another team’s colours just yet.
“We look forward to Geno continuing to provide great moments for the city of Pittsburgh, while helping us return the Penguins to Stanley Cup contention through his play on the ice and his leadership off the ice,” said general manager Kyle Dubas
in a statement released by the team.
Next season will be Malkin’s 21st with the club. Along with Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang, these three will continue to extend their record as the longest-tenured trio in NHL history.
Malkin’s 1269 games, all with Pittsburgh, have seen plenty of success, including 183 playoff games, three Stanley Cups, and a Conn Smythe Trophy.
In franchise history, Malkin is third behind only Crosby and Mario Lemieux for goals, assists, and points, and second all-time in games played. The future hall-of-famer has scored 533 goals and 1407 points, second-most amongst Russian NHLers all-time.
Hometown Remix jerseys leaked
The
Edmonton Oilers, along with every NHL team, will be getting brand new alternate jerseys for the 2026-27 season, and we have already seen a glimpse of a couple designs.
The Florida Panthers and New York Islanders jerseys were leaked on eBay listings, providing the first look at the new “Hometown Remix” line.
In true Miami fashion, the Panthers appear to be the first NHL team to wear a pink jersey, with a hockey stick and palm tree resting on a sunset as their logo – similar to the logo they used in their 2022 light blue reverse retros.
As for the Islanders, they are bringing back the Fisherman logo used in the mid-1990s, on a white jersey with light blue, dark blue, and orange accents.
According to Icethetics, the base colour of the Oilers’ remix jersey will be black, and will “share elements with the navy-blue third” released in 2019.
No concrete word on the logo yet, however, Edmonton Sport Talk’s Tom Gazzola – who was first to report on the last jersey release – said that this year’s jersey will be a similar concept to the cream-coloured alternates introduced in 2025.
This would be the first black jersey in the team’s history.
Vegas pushing Avs to the brink
The Vegas Golden Knights aim to bring out the brooms Tuesday night, as they have pushed the Colorado Avalanche to the brink of elimination.
Vegas is up 3-0 in the Western Conference Final, after they battled back from a three-goal deficit in Game 3 on Sunday evening. The Golden Knights have dominated the scoresheet, outscoring the Avs 12-6.
Offence from a wide variety of players and spectacular goaltending have been the story for the Golden Knights. They have had ten different goal scorers this series, and Carter Hart has saved 98 of 104 shots. The resurgence of Tomas Hertl has also contributed to the team’s success as he recorded one goal and three points in Game 3’s comeback win.
Scott Wedgewood will not be the starter for the Avalanche in Game 4, as the team looks to Mackenzie Blackwood to keep their season alive. Blackwood hasn’t played since being pulled in Game 3 against the Minnesota Wild after allowing three first-period goals. He currently holds a 3.20 goals against average and a .872 save percentage these playoffs.
Prior to this series, Colorado had only lost one of nine games in these playoffs, after sweeping the Los Angeles Kings and then beating the Wild 4-1. Now, they find themselves desperate for a reverse sweep, which only four teams have accomplished since the best-of-seven format was first introduced in 1938-39 for select series.
The Avs’ chances were not helped by Cale Makar’s undisclosed upper-body injury that sidelined him for the first two games.
However, the Golden Knights have also been without their captain Mark Stone at times, who has four goals and nine points through nine postseason contests. Two of nine points came when Stone tallied a goal and an assist in Sunday’s win, whereas Makar strung zeroes across the board in 27:14 of ice time.
If Vegas wins, it will be their third Stanley Cup Final berth in nine seasons.
Puckdrop in Vegas is at 7 p.m. MT.
