A former Oiler is taking his talent overseas. It was reported on Wednesday that Justin Schultz is heading to Switzerland to play for HC Lugano in Switzerland’s National League.
Schultz was selected 43rd overall in the 2008 draft by the Anaheim Ducks, but never suited up for the team. Instead, he signed as a free agent for the Oilers before the 2012-13 season. In parts of four seasons in the middle of the decade of darkness, Schultz scored 28 goals and 101 points in 248 games before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins before the 2016 trade deadline.
In his first two seasons with the Penguins, Schultz won back-to-back championships and compiled 22 goals and 113 points in 234 games, along with six goals and 29 points in 56 postseason games. Before the beginning of the 2020-21 season, Schultz signed a two-year contract with the Washington Capitals, before signing another two-year deal with the Seattle Kraken before the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
Throughout his National Hockey League career, Schultz played with the likes of Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and Alexander Ovechkin. Not many players could say they’ve done that.
Conor Sheary placed on waivers
Sticking with a player from the Pittsburgh Penguins’ back-to-back roster, Conor Sheary was placed on waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
Placed on NHL waivers today: Conor Sheary (TB). The veteran forward carries a $2M AAV and is signed through the end of next season.
Sheary signed with the Penguins and made his debut in 2015-16, scoring seven goals and 10 points in 44 games, before ramping up production in the postseason by scoring four goals and 10 points in 23 games. The following season was a career-best for Sheary, who scored 23 goals and 53 points in 61 games, along with two goals and seven points in 22 postseason games as the Penguins went back-to-back.
The 2017-18 season was Sheary’s last in his first stint as a Penguin, scoring 18 goals and 30 points in 79 games, but was traded to the Buffalo Sabres around the 2018 draft. Sheary spent two seasons in Buffalo, scoring 23 goals and 53 points in 133 games, before being traded back to the Penguins at the 2020 trade deadline, where he scored a goal and four points in eight games.
During the 2020 off-season, Sheary signed a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals, eventually turning that into a two-year extension before the end of the season. In his three seasons with the Capitals, Sheary scored 48 goals and 102 points in 206 games.
At the beginning of the 2023 off-season, Sheary signed with the Lightning, where he’s spent the past two seasons. Overall, he has four goals and 15 points in 60 games.
Utah called up top prospect Maveric Lamoureux
On Wednesday morning, the Utah Hockey Club called up Maveric Lamoureux.
2022 first round draft choice, defenseman Maveric Lamoureux, has been recalled from the Tucson Roadrunners!
Lamoureux was selected 29th overall in the 2022 draft by the Arizona Coyotes. In his last season for the Drummondville Voltigeurs, he scored nine goals and 33 points in 39 games but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that kept him out of the team’s Memorial Cup run. In his first four American Hockey League games, the 6’7” defenceman has two goals and three points.
The 20-year-old right-shot defenceman is replacing Sean Durzi, who underwent shoulder surgery and will be out for 4-6 months. Moreover, former Oiler draft pick John Marino also underwent surgery (lower back) and will be out for 3-4 months.
INJURY UPDATE
This is a big blow to the newly relocated team.
Robert Thomas fractured his ankle
Speaking of big blows, the St. Louis Blues will be without Robert Thomas for at least six weeks, as the team announced he has fractured his ankle.

Thomas was selected 20th overall by the Blues in 2017, joining the roster the same season the team won the Stanley Cup in the 2018-19 season. That year, he had nine goals and 33 points in 70 games, along with a goal and six points in 21 postseason games. The Aurora, Ontario native had two unremarkable seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21, but broke out in 2021-22 as he scored 20 goals and 77 points in 72 games.
The right-shot centre took a step back in 2022-23, scoring 18 goals and 65 points, but had a career-year with the Blues in 2023-24, scoring 26 goals and 86 points in 82 games. Early in the 2024-25 season, Thomas had a goal and six points in seven games.
