Hockey is back.

As the season comes closer, there have been a handful of players who have been injured. Moreover, a notable player has signed for a Kontinental Hockey League team, while five teams in the Western Hockey League have applied for the 2026 Memorial Cup.

<h2>Arthur Kaliyev out with a broken collarbone</h2>

How Kaliyev’s injury happened is unclear, but the 23-year-old didn’t play a whole lot in 2023-24, scoring seven goals and 15 points in 51 games with the Kings. His career-high in points came in 2022-23 when he scored 13 goals and 28 points in 56 games, while he set a career-high in goals in 2021-22 with 14.
Kaliyev’s name was often in trade rumours, but he stuck around with the team and will do so for the foreseeable future. It’s not a huge loss for the Kings, but hopefully he can return to health in a short time.
<h2>Matt Boldy injured “week-to-week”</h2>
There’s some bad news for the Minnesota Wild, as one of their star forwards, <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/wilds-matt-boldy-out-week-to-week-with-lower-body-injury">Matt Boldy, will miss some time with a lower-body injury</a>. He’s out week-to-week.

It’s a big blow for the Wild, as the 12th-overall pick in the 2019 draft scored 29 goals and 69 points last season in 75 games. While he didn’t score as many goals as he did in the 2022-23 season (31), his 69 points were a career-high.
At only 23 years old, the power forward is only going to get better with more ice time, so hopefully this isn’t a long-term injury.
<h2>Tony DeAngelo signed in the Kontinental Hockey League</h2>
On Monday, <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/tony-deangelo-signs-one-year-deal-with-khls-ska-st-petersburg">it was announced by the Kontinental Hockey League’s Twitter account that Tony DeAngelo signed with SKA Saint Petersburg on a one-year deal.</a>

DeAngelo has bounced around the league quite a bit since he was drafted 19th-overall in the 2014 draft. Originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, he was traded at the 2016 draft to the Arizona Coyotes, spending one season with the team. DeAngelo was traded again the following off-season, this time to the New York Rangers.
The right-shot defenceman found some footing in the Big Apple, including putting up a career-high 15 goals and 53 points in the 2019-20 season. However, off-ice issues saw him waived and bought out after parts of four seasons in the organization. He signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers the following off-season, eventually being traded back to the Hurricanes.
For the second time in his career, DeAngelo was bought out in late-July.
Five Western Hockey League teams applied for the 2026 Memorial Cup
<a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/brandon-kelowna-lethbridge-medicine-hat-and-spokane-submit-bids-for-2026-memorialcup">It was announced on Monday that five teams in the Western Hockey League have put in a bid for the 2026 Memorial Cup</a> &#8211; The Brandon Wheat Kings, Kelowna Rockets, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers, and the Spokane Chiefs.
Since the Memorial Cup expanded to four teams for the 1983 tournament, three of the five teams have hosted the tournament. Spokane was the first American team to do so in 1998, while Kelowna hosted the best-ever Memorial Cup tournament in 2004. Brandon also hosted the tournament in 2010, while the two Albertan teams have never hosted the tournament.
Spokane and Medicine Hat each have two Memorial Cups in franchise history, Kelowna has won one (five appearances since 2003), while Lethbridge and Brandon have never won one.
The 2025 Memorial Cup is set to be hosted in Rimouski, Québec as it’s the Quebéc Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s cycle to host the cup. The 2024 cup was won by its host, the Saginaw Spirit.
