It’s not an Edmonton Oilers playoff game without a little bit of drama.
On Sunday night, fans of the Oilers were treated to yet another back-and-forth affair between them and the Anaheim Ducks.
However, it wasn’t until overtime that one moment sent the hockey world into a frenzy. Ryan Poehling fired the puck at Tristan Jarry, and it managed to wiggle past the netminder. The problem was that the NHL couldn’t definitively determine whether the puck crossed the line because Jarry’s skate was covering the goal line and the puck.
Given how the game went and ended, there was plenty for fans to say online.
There’d be no b–ching from any able-minded Oilers fan if it was called a goal in the moment, followed by the fact there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn it. What everyone is fired up about is that they invented a new way to determine the call tonight, which is horse shit. – RyderFM via X
They can track a f—ing tennis ball going 180 to millimeters on the line and they still dont have the goal line technology! Give me a f—ing break! – Banjoguy55 via X
I’d argue that any actual good coach in the league would’ve at least argued with the refs about that goal being deemed a good goal. Knob just walks back to the dressing room without a single peep to the refs. Attitude reflects leadership, and this coach has NO leadership.- David__co via X
My take on the goal: no way on the ice they could have called it a goal. Was it past the line; yes it was. Definitive with video; no. But it was past, based on size of puck and where the line is. That said should have been No goal on the ice. Inconclusive on review. Meaning no goal.
These Ducks are tough and have outplayed us at every factor of the game so far. One game at a time. I still believe in these Oilers that the season isnt over! Go Oilers Go! – Trevor Airdrie via Facebook
Not sure how they is a conclusive goal. Not sure how refs and linesman call this a goal when they were not there to see it or if they were there to see they cannot see it! – John Rodgers via Facebook
The ref should have at least been in position to make the call. So because he wasn’t he should have at least reviewed it before calling it a goal. I don’t care who you are cheering for. This was a bad call with the way it was handled. – Bob Gail Allan via Facebook
Don’t understand how it was called a goal on the ice. – Mylesconstant via Instagram
Sure it’s a goal but why isthe ref calling it a goal if he didn’t even see it go in? – Adriangonciarz via Instagram
The league is a joke. Calling it a goal on the ice but yet none of them seen it? How can you call it a goal when you can’t see it FULLY ACROSS? – Msmaiel88 via Instagram
On the flip side, aside from the talk about the goal call, Oilers fans are not feeling optimistic about the team’s chances in this series. In a weird way, some are hoping for a first-round exit as they believe it will benefit the team in the long run. Sure, this might not be the year, but there is still hope that the Edmonton Oilers can win the Stanley Cup with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Nathan MacKinnon is 16 months older than McDavid and his team has been eliminated in the first round two of the last three seasons. We’ll see what happens this year but they’re absolutely still a favorite to win it all and no reason to believe that next year will be any different. – OilAcumen via X

I’m normally Mr optimism but I don’t see the Oilers winning this series anymore. Last nights game was a dagger. Oilers can’t keep a lead late in the 3rd. Haven’t been able to string wins together all season. Connor McDavid injured. Hockey gods have others plans I guess.

The season is over, he’s likely canned and the MFer just walks off like he’s at a funeral. Yell, bust a stick do something you imbecile. Toast is actually good so calling him toast is a disservice to toast. Best part of this flameout is that guy packing his shit. – Resplendent Beetle via X
I will say this – after 3 consecutive decent runs, this team is showing the wear and tear. It’s like the shadow of an actual NHL team.
Based on the Avs-Kings series, I think the results would have been the same. – RKM17 via X
Genuinely feel awful for Tristan Jarry he was great . This team is just absolute junk. – NHL_Bouchard via X
The Oilers losing would probably be good for them as a franchise. They gotta retool BAD cause the collective greatness of 97/29 can only carry you so far for so long. – FitzGSN_ via X
The Oilers are going to see a complete organizational reset after this collapse. The stars need a rest and they’re about to get it. – BouchBombs via  X
Oilers got robbed they shouldn’t of called that a goal not one ref was by the net. – Ashle.y1966 via Instagram
Game 7 is gonna be incredible back in Edmonton. – Matteo.Ferrari22 via Instagram
We are going to make a comeback. Game 7 is going to be an electric game, and Game 5, they are at home, the Oilers have to take the duck back to the pond. – via Duavaition via Instagram
Tbh, Oil is juiced. A good long offseason is needed. Even if we win the series, it won’t be enough to go back to the finals. This year was weird, it wasn’t comfy with the wins and losses and we never won five in a row till the end of the year. So we juiced ourselves to make the playoffs. – Jason.Mantri via Instagram
Unfortunately, I think this is over in 5, but hope will also never die. Oilers in five. Just remember, folks, we have been blessed with Oilers hockey two years in a row in June. Also, Jarry had a hell of a game. Play him again in Game 5. – Amby_offord via Instagram
Oilers fans are definitely in an odd spot given the team’s current state. On the one hand, you want to see them make a run to the finals again and win the Stanley Cup. That’s the dream scenario, but this fanbase can also be realistic and wouldn’t mind if a longer off-season leads to long-term success.
The dust has settled on Game 4, and fans will argue with others about the overtime decisions for weeks. But now the Oilers will gear up to save their season on Tuesday night in Game 5 in Edmonton.
