The Edmonton Oilers have selected Swedish forward Malcom Gästrin in the third round.
Edmonton selected the 6-foot, 174lb, left-shooting 17-year-old with the 84th overall draft pick of the 2026 NHL draft. According to Daily Faceoff’s prospect expert Steven Ellis, Gästrin was not listed in top 120 draft rankings.
NHL Central Scouting’s ranking of European skaters listed him at 60th.
Gästrin played against a variety of age groups, including U18, U20, and in the Swedish men’s league during the 2025-26 season. Against players in his own age group, he scored 12 goals and 30 points in 19 games with Modo Jr U18.
He scored nine goals and 25 points in 24 games with Modo Jr against U20 competition, which was second on his team in scoring. In five playoff games, he scored two goals and four points. Gästrin then suited up for four games against men.
The Pro Hockey Group, founded by draft analyst Jason Bukala, says that about Gastrin:
“Gastrin is a creative, skilled forward who thrives with the puck on his stick. His vision, playmaking ability and offensive instincts allow him to consistently create chances, making him an intriguing offensive talent.”
Gästrin is young for his draft year, with an August birthday, when he will turn 18. That suggests there’s some room to grow for the youngster with a high upside, but a sleight frame.
His older brother Milton was a second-round pick of the Washington in last year’s draft. He was part of the trade package that the Capitals used this week to acquire Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues.
Gästrin is the second Oiler draft choice of the 2026 NHL draft, after Edmonton traded down from the 52nd overall choice for the 58th and 133rd picks. They chose Latvian centre Rudolfs Berzkalns out of the USHL.
The Oilers will have three more draft choices in the fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds, unless another trade comes together.
