Oilers’ goaltending tandem ranks 25th in Daily Faceoff pre-season rankings

The Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending situation appears to be an area of concern once again.

Prior to the start of the 2026-27 NHL season, Daily Faceoff released a ranking for all 32 teams’ goalie tandems. As has been the case for the majority of the Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl era, the Oilers rank rather low, coming in at 25th place.

The Oilers are expected to have a three-goaltender tandem, with Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin having this to say about Frederik Andersen, Devon Levi, and Tristan Jarry:

“The good news: between Andersen’s experience and Levi’s long-term upside, the Oilers are better positioned in goal than they have been in years. The bad news: with Andersen suffering an injury during offseason training, the Oilers are somehow still saddled with Jarry as their presumed season-opening starter.
“He made for a terrible in-season trade acquisition last season, posting an .857 SV% in the Copper and Blue, and wasn’t tabbed as Edmonton’s starter to open the playoffs. Levi hasn’t lived up to his prospect pedigree yet, but he only has to *checks notes* play better than Tristan Jarry to push his way into a prominent NHL role early this season.”

Jarry was acquired in mid-December from the Penguins and posted an .858 save percentage and 3.86 goals-against average in 19 games following the trade. Despite giving up assets to acquire a goaltender who was on waivers about a year ago, Jarry appeared in just one postseason game, stopping 34 of 38 shots for an .895 save percentage.

The start of his 2025-26 season was encouraging, as the 31-year-old had a .909 save percentage and 2.66 goals-against average in 14 games with the Penguins, but it’s been a long time since Jarry has played as a league-average netminder.

Frederik Andersen recently got his name on the Stanley Cup, but also had a rough 2025-26 regular season. Over 35 games with the Carolina Hurricanes, he posted an .874 save percentage and 3.05 goals-against average. He made up for it in the playoffs, though, as he finished his 16 games with a .910 save percentage and 1.89 goals-against average, before his season ended in the Stanley Cup Final due to a knee injury.

Unfortunately for the Oilers, Andersen will be out to begin the season due to an injury suffered in the off-season. That means they’ll need to rely on up-and-coming goaltender Devon Levi to play a number of games to begin the year.

Acquired for a third-round pick this past off-season, the 24-year-old was drafted in the seventh-round of the 2020 NHL draft by the Florida Panthers, but was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in the Sam Reinhart trade. Since the trade, Levi has played 39 NHL games where he has an .894 save percentage and 3.29 goals-against average, as well as a 17-17-2 record.

All of Levi’s 2025-26 season was spent in the AHL, where he finished the year with a .904 save percentage and 2.83 goals-against average in 52 games. That’s down from him .919 save percentage and 2.20 goals-against average in 42 AHL games in 2024-25.

As for the other Pacific Division teams, there are three teams with a worse tandem than the Oilers. The Anaheim Ducks rank 26th, the San Jose Sharks rank 30th, and the Vancouver Canucks rank 31st.

It’ll be a long season for the Calgary Flames and their fans, but their goaltending tandem of Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley ranks 13th, second-best for the Pacific Division. Only the Los Angeles Kings have a better tandem according to Daily Faceoff, as they rank 12th.

The Vegas Golden Knights, the team Andersen and the Hurricanes defeated in the Stanley Cup Finals, are in the same boat as the Oilers, as their tandem ranks 24th according to Daily Faceoff. As always, the Seattle Kraken are mediocre, with their tandem ranking 21st-best.
