It’ll be another familiar Pacific Division foe for the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the playoffs.
After beating the Los Angeles Kings in the first round for the fourth consecutive year, the Oilers will move on to face the Vegas Golden Knights, who beat Edmonton en route to their first Stanley Cup Championship in 2023.
The Golden Knights finished at the top of the Pacific with a 50-22-10 record, their fifth time winning the division in eight seasons since entering the NHL. They lined up against the Minnesota Wild in the first round and won the series in six games after falling behind 2-1. Vegas finished things off on Thursday with a 3-2 win on the road in Game 6.
The Oilers and Golden Knights met in the second round of the playoffs two years ago, with Vegas taking down Edmonton in six games. After beating the Oilers, the Golden Knights took down the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final before cruising past the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final in five games.
Last year, the Golden Knights lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Stars while the Oilers reached the Cup Final, ultimately falling to the Panthers in seven games. It was a down year for Vegas after their Stanley Cup, and they improved by 12 points in the standings.
Edmonton and Vegas split their four meetings during the regular season in 2024-25. The Golden Knights won in Edmonton in November by a score of 4-2 and edged out a 1-0 win at home in early December. The Oilers then battled back with a 6-3 home victory a couple of weeks later.
The only meeting between the Oilers and Golden Knights after the trade deadline came on April 1 in Vegas, with Edmonton grinding out a 3-2 win despite not having captain Connor McDavid in the lineup.
