Nearly as soon as the clock hit zero on the Edmonton Oilers’ 6-2 thrashing of the New York Rangers on Saturday night, the team made some roster moves, loaning Drake Caggiula and Josh Brown to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
It’s unknown how quickly they will make it to Southern California, as the Condors host the Colorado Eagles for a 3 p.m. MST puck drop on Sunday. Bakersfield has one more game before the Oilers’ next on Friday with the Abbotsford Canucks coming to town on Tuesday night.
Their assignment will get the Oilers out of the LTIR pool for now, meaning that they can begin accruing cap space, once again, for the next number of days.
Edmonton’s next game comes on Friday against the Utah Hockey Club, as they have their bye week from Sunday through Thursday. They enter the break with an 11-9-2 record and a .545 points percentage, the fifth-best mark in the Pacific Division.
Caggiula, 30, has played in four games with the Oilers this year, scoring one assist, taking four shots on goal, averaging 8:16 in ice time, and scoring two goals for and two against. Brown, also 30, has appeared in three games, averaging 12:13 in ice time, and the Oilers were outscored 2-1 with him on the ice.
Both have fared better during their time in Bakersfield this season. Caggiula has scored five goals and nine points in 11 games, while Brown has notched two assists in 12 games. He’s been a key part of their penalty kill, which has been among the league’s best this season.
Caggiula is in the second year of a two-year, two-way deal with a league minimum $775,000 salary. Brown, meanwhile, is in the first year of a three-year deal paying him $1-million.
