Oilers prospect David Lewandowski scores as Team Germany staves off World Juniors relegation

Team Germany has lived to see another World Junior Championship.
After going winless in the group stage, Team Germany pulled out an 8-4 game in the relegation game against Team Denmark, staving off relegation for another year. On that team is Edmonton Oilers’ prospect David Lewandowski.
It was a rather quiet tournament for the 18-year-old, as he scored a goal and three points in five games for Germany, with his goal coming in the relegation game. Although he scored one fewer goal than he did in the tournament last year, the Oilers’ fourth-round pick doubled his point total.
Lewandowski is set to turn 19 years old in February, meaning that he’ll be eligible for next season’s tournament in Edmonton and Red Deer. Next year’s tournament will be Germany’s eighth consecutive year in the top level, earning a promotion from Division I, Group A’s tournament in 2019.
The Schwetzingen, Germany native will return to the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League in the coming days. Through 28 games, the winger has eight goals and 32 points, well on pace to surpass his total from last season when he scored 15 goals and 39 points in 52 games.
Despite not playing in nearly a month (his last game was on December 9th), Lewandowski is just one point shy of the team lead. As it stands, the Blades currently sit fifth in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, with the top eight teams making the postseason from each conference.
The Oilers’ other prospect participating at the 2026 WJC is Team USA’s Asher Barnett, the Oilers’ fifth round pick in 2025. Through four games, the left-shot defenceman has been held pointless and has two penalty minutes in a third-pairing role. Like Lewandowski, Barnett will be eligible for next year’s tournament as well.
Friday is the final day for the quarterfinals, with the semifinals beginning on Sunday. It’s a quick turnaround to the medal rounds, as the tournament will be decided on Monday.
