The Edmonton Oilers have made two more roster cuts ahead of Monday’s roster deadline.

On Sunday, the team announced that Damien Carfagna has been loaned to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors, while netminder Matt Tomkins is on waivers.

Carfagna, a 23-year-old defenceman, was one of the standouts on the Oilers’ blue line in pre-season. Out of any prospect to appear in any of the four games, his stock may have rose the most heading into the 2026-27 season.

Signed out of Ohio State University following the 2024-25 season, the left-shot defenceman made his professional debut with the Condors last season, scoring seven goals and 22 points in 66 games, with another goal in the three postseason games the Condors played.

The Oilers’ blue line is as deep as it has been in years, and Carfagna’s emergence as a solid puck-moving defenceman has positioned him for a potential NHL debut later on this season if injuries or poor performance occurs. But for now, he’ll join a Condors team with a bunch of NHL-ready prospects.

As for Tomkins, assuming he clears, he’ll likely join the Condors as well. Last season, he posted a .904 save percentage and 2.98 goals-against average in 42 games, appearing in more than half the Condors’ games in 2025-26.

That may not be the case this season, as the Oilers have four notable goaltending prospects for just a handful of spots between their AHL and ECHL teams. Tomkins is set to serve as the veteran netminder for the Oilers’ two minor league teams, while Eemil Vinni, Samuel Jonsson, Nathaniel Day, and Connor Ungar all fight for spots as well.

Right now, Tomkins is the fourth netminder on the depth chart, as the Oilers are expected to carry a three-goalie tandem of Devon Levi, Tristan Jarry, and Frederik Andersen. It’s worth noting that the latter is injured, meaning that Tomkins could end up getting a look if either Levi or Jarry go down with an injury. But he still has to clear.

By my count, there are still 18 forwards, 10 defencemen, and four netminders on the training camp roster, with three forwards, a defenceman, and a goaltender all injured. Teams must have no more than 23 players on the roster by September 28th at 3:00 PM MT.
