Could the Edmonton Oilers have interest in bringing in Kirby Dach?

According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, the Oilers and the Calgary Flames are looking to trade for Dach, with Seravalli describing the Oilers’ interest in the 25-year-old as “drooling” for the Montreal Canadiens winger.

There are several connections to the Oilers, as well. Not only was the third-overall pick in 2019 born in nearby Fort Saskatchewan, but his younger brother Colton also plays for the team. It’s worth mentioning that Seravalli noted that wanting to acquire Kirby isn’t necessarily to reunite the brothers.

Another important connection is the fact that Oilers’ general manager Stan Bowman was the general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks when they selected him third overall in 2019. According to Seravalli, Bowman believes K. Dach has been unlucky with injuries, which has hampered him in reaching that potential.

During the off-season, Seravalli reported that multiple teams offered the Canadiens a second-round pick for Dach’s services, but the Canadiens appear to be holding out for a better package. During the 2022 off-season, the Canadiens traded the 13th- and 66th-overall picks to acquire Dach from the Blackhawks.

Dach has had some rotten injury luck since being drafted. In 2019-20, he remained relatively healthy, appearing in 64 NHL games. However, he played just 18 games in 2020-21, 70 in 2021-22, 58 in 2022-23, three in 2023-24, 57 in 2024-25, and just 37 games last regular season.

The Fort Saskatchewan product has provided solid middle-six production when healthy, scoring eight goals and 15 points in his 37 games last season. In the Canadiens’ run to the Eastern Conference final, Dach potted four goals and five points in 19 games. Back in 2024-25, he scored 10 goals and 22 points in 57 games, with a career high of 14 goals and 38 points coming in 2022-23 with the Canadiens.

He’s a speedy wing who provides some offence in the bottom six, but doesn’t penalty kill. While he was formerly a centre, Dach mainly plays on the wing nowadays. He also carries a $3.6 million cap hit, becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
