The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Owen Michaels to a two-year contract extension, the club announced Monday.
The deal will pay him an AAV of $900,000.
Michaels, 24, joined the Oilers organization this spring, signing a one-year contract after his tenure at the NCAA’s Western Michigan University ended. He was the captain of the team, scoring 13 goals and 26 points in 39 games, and was a Hobey Baker nominee.
In the 2024-25 season, he helped the Broncos win the National Championship, was named to the All-Tournament team, and was named the tournament MVP. Across three seasons in Michigan, he scored 33 goals and 69 points in 119 games.

What type of player are the Oilers getting in Owen Michaels?

Oilersnation’s Dave Hall opined that Michaels is a player who could help the Oilers in the future:
At 6-foot-2 and 193 lbs., the Detroit native doesn’t project as a high-end offensive player at the next level. Truthfully, that’s not where his value lies for the Oilers. Instead, Michaels brings a detail-driven, hard-working two-way game that should translate well to the professional ranks. He was deployed in all situations at Western Michigan, serving as the team’s primary penalty killer and one of its most relied-upon centres in the faceoff circle, where he posted a 58.9 per cent win rate for third-best in the conference.
He also contributes defensively in a meaningful way, ranking among the top forwards with 23 blocked shots. While it may not have been on the National stage like in 2025, he continued to show a knack for timely offence with four of his 13 goals this season coming as game-winners. When he does generate offence, it typically comes from the interior, whether that’s working the slot, getting to high-danger areas, and capitalizing in tight. He brings a worthy shot and decent hands in tight, enabling him to finish in a variety of ways.
But his projection is clear: a bottom-six centre who can be trusted in defensive situations, kill penalties, and handle tough minutes. He plays with a strong motor, finishes his checks, and consistently competes for pucks.

How does Zack Sharp’s acquisition connect to Owen Michaels?

Michaels isn’t the only Western Michigan product who has joined the Oilers system in recent months, as his teammate, defenceman Zack Sharp, was acquired by the team in the Darnell Nurse trade. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman said Sharp caught their eye while scouting Michaels.
“I was impressed last year when we went to watch Owen Michaels,” Bowman told Oilers NOW’s Bob Stauffer. “We were recruiting Owen, so they were teammates, and every time I went to watch Owen, Zack stood out.
“It’s always a good sign when you’re not there to watch a player, but you leave the game and you make a note like, wow, he was really good.”
