It’s been a year-and-a-half since Peter Chiarelli was fired by the Edmonton Oilers. It looks like his next chance is on the horizon.
According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, Chiarelli is expected to be one of the finalists for the Florida Panthers’ vacant general manager position, replacing Dale Tallon who was fired by the team earlier in the month.
“Slap Shots has been told that Peter Chiarelli, who has been promoted by the NHL for essentially every executive opening that arises, is expected to be among the finalists,” Brooks says in the report.
Back in July, when John Chayka and the Arizona Coyotes mysteriously parted ways, Chiarelli’s name was brought up as a possible replacement, potentially a veteran who could come in and help guide rookie general manager Steve Sullivan. That report also indicated that the NHL has pushed hard for a team to give Chiarelli another opportunity.
Several sources indicated former Boston and Edmonton GM Peter Chiarelli is someone league officials would like to help find his way back to the NHL after a disastrous turn in Edmonton and think that Arizona would be a good landing place.
It isn’t uncommon for the NHL’s main office to recommend executives to owners, especially those of struggling teams, to fill positions in their front office. But, given his tumultuous time in Edmonton, it’s a little surprising to see the league pushing Chiarelli on struggling franchises in Arizona and Florida.
It seems like Pistol Pete will be back behind the wheel sooner rather than later. If he winds up in Florida, I’d be on the phone immediately asking about Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov.
