The Edmonton Oilers are expected to sign UFA Gaetan Haas to a new contract, TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reported Monday morning.
The 28-year-old was signed by the Oilers last offseason out of the Swiss League where he played with SC Bern.
Joining the Oilers this year, Haas had a two-game stint with the Bakersfield Condors after struggling to adjust to the NHL’s pace. Once recalled not long after, Haas found his place in the Oilers bottom-six.
In 58 games this year, he scored five goals and as many assists. His underlying numbers were average. At 5v5, he posted a 48.43 CF%, 44.44 GF% and an xGF% of 49.82.
According to Hockeyviz.com, has provided defence at an eight percent better rate than league average, but provided offence six percent below league average.
He found a home as a strong defensive option for the Oilers.
I can’t imagine a new contract for Haas being more than a year or two at a similar dollar amount.
