A pair of Edmonton Oilers defencemen will be heading to Switzerland to represent Canada at the World Hockey Championship.
Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard are set to don the red and white at the annual tournament, set to take place between May 15 to 31, 2026, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
For Nurse, it will be his third time playing for Canada at the World Championship, playing on the 2018 and 2019 teams. In 2018, he was joined by Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, as Canada finished fourth in the tournament. The following year, he was the lone Oilers player for Canada, picking up a Silver medal.
Between the tournaments, he’s scored two goals and five points in 20 games. Nurse had previously represented Canada at the 2015 World Juniors, as well as U18 and U17 tournaments for Canada.
For Bouchard, this will be his first time playing in the World Championship, but not his first time playing for Canada, represnting his country at the 2019 World Juniors, scoring three assists for Canada. He scored one goal and six points playing for Canada White at the U17 championship in 2016.
The management group for Canada’s 2026 World Championship team has been hard at work building an impressive roster. Young stars Gavin McKenna and Macklin Celebrini will be heading to Switzerland, as well as a solid group of veterans, including John Tavares, Ryan O’Reilly, Mathew Barzal, Morgan Rielly, Robert Thomas and Mark Scheifele.
Canada will look to make the podium for the first time in three years, most recently winning gold in 2021 and 2022, and silver in 2019 and 2022. Canada will play in Group B at the tournament, with Sweden, Czechia, Denmark, Italy, Slovakia, Norway, and Slovenia.
Canada’s round-robin play begins on Friday, May 15, when Canada takes on Sweden at 8:20 a.m. MT.
Here’s how their full schedule breaks down, with all times in MT:
