Adam Larsson is the newest Edmonton Oiler and his addition today (in exchange for Taylor Hall) gives the Oilers a different look as the team reaches free agency.

OILERS CURRENT ROSTER

Edmonton is in the Milan Lucic sweepstakes, and if they get him that $63 million number is going to rise close to 70M in a quick hurry. Peter Chiarelli may grab a goalie, another RH D (still need a hammer from the point, men) and by then July 4 will be here and everyone will be headed for cottage country. What can we expect for the rest of this week:
  • Milan Lucic
  • A small bet RHD with a hammer (Darcy McLeod from Because Oilers has mentioned Zach Redmond)
  • A backup goalie (Jhonas Enroth or Chad Johnson)
I think (and this is a guess, today showed us that predicting Peter Chiarelli is unwise) the Oilers may plan to run the three centers with less expensive wingers (Lucic and Eberle being the outliers). I suspect it means we might see (beyond the group listed above):
  • Jesse Puljujarvi get a full shot at an NHL job this fall
  • Drake Caggiula in play if he can impress at TC
One final note: Nail Yakupov. I wonder if the organization decides to keep him around for another year. I understand the idea of flushing the young man—he has struggled for sure and there are issues—but the Oilers just traded a winger who has scored 71 points per 82 games on a team that didn’t get much done when he was off the ice (McDavid aside).
It was always going to be an interesting summer. It is suddenly something very different.
