Hello everyone, welcome to week three of the Intern Diaries.
Just in case anyone was wondering, there are now 81 days until the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic, which is a charity golf tournament hosted by the Hyman family in Toronto, and it’s basically just the Oilers’ Met Gala.
I started keeping track on the whiteboard a few days ago so that the office knows about this highly important date. It’s like Leashadawg Christmas.
Offseason, offseason, offseason… that’s been my entire life as of late. Everything I have been writing about, talking about, and thinking about has been related to the offseason. I have probably talked about the Toronto Maple Leafs draft lottery steal more times than I have listened to the new Noah Kahan album this week, and that’s saying a lot.
This week we got another intern on the writing squad, Lane Golden. I actually go to school with him so it was nice to see him appear in the office on Monday. He let me know that we are actually mutuals on Twitter/X, and I had no idea. His account is pretty sweet, though — you should check it out.
Lane told me a funny story this week about the last time I saw Zach Hyman. He said that at the end of the photo day event at Rogers Place, where I may or may not have lined up twice for one player, Andrew Mangiapane said, “I can’t believe people came through twice,” and Hyman replied, “Oh, that’s just Alicia.”
It’s a very embarrassing story, honestly, but it’s also kind of cool and funny, so I wanted to share. At least Lane said he was smiling while he said it.
As for the rest of the week, it was lots of writing and being chirped by Michael Menzies for some of my “artistic word choices,” like “triad,” or getting Mandela Effected by thinking the novel Cujo by Stephen King was spelled Kujo — please tell me I am not the only one. Most of my days are honestly spent arguing with Menzies, but it’s all in good fun.
My articles this week were five NHL Notebooks, two Top 100 Oilers, and one about the Oilers and ex-Oilers who were named to the IIHF World Championship roster for Team Canada. Again, it’s all offseason, offseason, offseason.
I also received training to join the marketing team for social media copy writing. I’m super excited to get going on that, as marketing has always been something I have been interested in. Woz has still been dragging me around for the content team too. I am practically his intern some days.
Leashadawg signing off. I hope to see you guys for next week’s edition of The Intern Diaries.
