This week in 2001 (July 1), the Edmonton Oilers traded Doug Weight and Michel Riesen to the St. Louis Blues for Marty Reasoner, Jochen Hecht and Jan Horacek.

The Weight era came to an end largely due to the Oilers being unable to afford re-signing him. He came to Edmonton in 1993 in a trade that saw Esa Tikkanen get sent to the New York Rangers and spent nine successful years in Edmonton.

In regular-season games, Weight scored 157 goals and 577 points in 588 games. He was an unsung hero of the Oilers of the 90’s and scored a career-high 104 points in 1995-96 — a season he never got rightful recognition for.

In the playoffs, he kept up his high-scoring ways putting up 33 points in 39 playoff games for the Oilers.

While Horacek never played in the NHL, Reasoner played six years for the Oilers scoring 121 points in 351 games. Hecht was a one-season-wonder for the Oilers scoring 40 points in 2001-02 before he was traded to Atlanta for two second-round picks used to select Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers and Jarret Stoll.

Weight, meanwhile, went on to play for the Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders before retiring in 2011.
