WHEN LUCK GETS ANGRY

I have promised myself this draft lottery day will never match last year (this video has been viewed over 100,000 times—I am in for over 50 myself) but the new rules mean there is grave danger as well as rich reward at 6pm our time.
Everybody is talking about the lottery. Will Edmonton win? At what point does luck become diabolical? The NHL draft lottery has fans yelling at hood ornaments, shaking fists at clouds and working themselves into an epic Saturday night lather.
Is the NHL lottery a sport? The searing pain in that video suggests the answer is yes.
This is the likely conclusion we will begin to get our head’s around later today. Along with the ecstasy of ruining lives across the nation, Edmonton fans have to be aware that five is a number and could be the exact spot the Oilers logo lands today. No. 5? Where the hell is that? Is it a long drive?
Sage advice. Mr. Rogers once said look for helpers, and in the case of McLennan this is a wise tweet and young athletes would do well to heed the words. It is simply awful that someone would be so vicious as to ruin a great moment in a young person’s life (and cost them over $10 million, apparently) but this is the world we live in.
Remember the millions of body language experts last year? Within seconds of the McDavid lottery, tweets were flying about the personal devastation and possible upheaval when Edmonton won. If the Oilers win today, expect twitter to crash and the verbal to be vicious, personal and unfair.
Remember: You didn’t do one damn thing to cause of hinder the lottery and luck is luck is luck is luck. The dice have no memory. Everyone with a brain knows it.
This is going to be a fun, tense, possibly frustrating day. I have one piece of advice for you: Enjoy it, but remember the real draft lottery was a year ago. This is a lottery that includes an outstanding talent as the treasure. Luck can get as angry as it likes today, the die is cast.
Connor McDavid is an Edmonton Oiler.
