The Edmonton Oilers will have one of their top players celebrate a significant milestone on Thursday night.
As they take the ice to play the Dallas Stars, Zach Hyman will suit up for his 700th National Hockey League game. He’s in his fifth season with the club after signing a seven-year contract back on July 28, 2021.
Hyman has been a productive workhorse. This season only, he’s produced 27 goals and 17 assists for a crisp 44 points, all while missing time at the beginning of the season due to injury.
Those are the precise goals and points he finished the 2024-25 season with, meaning he’s scored at the same rate despite playing 27 fewer games.
Since December 1, his 26 goals lead the NHL. As a big cog to the league’s number one power play, Hyman also has scored 10 goals on the man-advantage this year.
Originally drafted in 2010 by the Florida Panthers, it took several years before he became an NHL’er.
Hyman began his NHL career in 2015-16 and played six seasons total with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now, Hyman has played more games as an Oiler than a Leaf, with his 355th game in Edmonton blue and orange on Thursday.
Hyman set a career high in goals in 2023-24 with 54 tallies.
Combined with playoff games, this will be the 800th game tonight, as he’s played exactly 100 postseason contests. He’s scored 257 goals and 487 points in his career.
Teammate Leon Draisaitl surpassed Mark Messier for the fourth most games played as an Oiler in the regular season on Tuesday against the Colorado Avalanche. Trent Frederic also played in his 400th NHL game on Tuesday.
Often considered one of the greatest free agent signings in franchise history, Hyman has two seasons remaining on his deal at $5.5 million per year.
