The Edmonton Oilers kept their eventful offseason rolling by announcing on Tuesday morning that Leon Draisaitl signed an eight-year, $112 million contract extension.
Draisaitl’s new contract, set to start in 2025-26 with a $14 million cap hit, now stands as the highest in the NHL. Love or hate the cap hit, he’s unquestionably one of the best in the league, a surefire Hockey Hall of Famer in the making, and it’s a big win for Oil Country that he’s committed to staying in Edmonton.
The Oilers’ centerman has repeatedly proven that he can take over games, ranking second in points in the NHL over the last four seasons. With that in mind, below we highlight the seven games where he dominated the scoreboard with five points or more.

Draisaitl Records First 5-Point Game in 2017 Playoffs

The Oilers were down 3-2 in their second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks and faced a must-win Game 6 on May 7, 2017, and they wasted little time, coming out strong in front of an amped-up crowd at Rogers Place.
Edmonton exploded with five goals in the first period, just one short of their playoff record for most goals in a single frame. Draisaitl opened the scoring with a fanned shot that slipped through John Gibson’s five-hole, then netted his second goal almost five minutes later with a backhand tally. In the third period, he completed the hat trick, firing a one-timer from the slot, set up by Milan Lucic. The German superstar also added two assists, recording his first-ever five-point game in the NHL.
The Oilers cruised to a dominant 7-1 win, forcing a Game 7 back in Anaheim. Draisaitl stole the spotlight, scoring the first playoff hat trick by an Oiler since Doug Weight and Bill Guerin in 2000. Additionally, it was the biggest game of his young career, and on that night, Oilers fans got their first true glimpse of the domination he was capable of, especially in the playoffs.

Draisaitl Recorded First 5-Assist Game Against Avalanche in 2019

Early in the 2019-2020 season, the Oilers faced the Colorado Avalanche on November 14, 2019, looking to bounce back after a 6-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
Former Oiler tough guy Zack Kassian set the tone just 20 seconds in, delivering a heavy hit on Nathan MacKinnon, followed by a fight with Matt Calvert that sent Rogers Place into a frenzy. Colorado scored first, but the Oilers’ dynamic duo of Draisaitl and Connor McDavid quickly took over, with Draisaitl racking up three assists in just over nine minutes during the first period alone.
Additionally, the centerman recorded his fifth assist of the night by setting up Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the power play, in a game where McDavid hit a career-high with six points. Also, Draisaitl’s 41 points through 21 games at that time were the most by any NHL player in that span since Mario Lemieux’s 45 in 2002-03, as the Oilers cruised to a 6-2 win.

Draisaitl Tallies First 5-Point Game Against Predators

March 2, 2020, kicked off Draisaitl’s reign of terror against the Nashville Predators.
The former third-overall pick delivered a dominant performance from start to finish on a night when he netted his first career NHL four-goal game. He scored his first goal with a one-timer, finished off a slick play by former Oiler Kailer Yamamoto for his second, fired a wrister for his third, and notched his fourth with the sneaky backhand-to-forehand play, off a pass from McDavid on the PP.
The Oilers’ centerman added an assist to cap off a five-point night as Edmonton defeated the Predators 8-3. In doing so, Draisaitl surpassed his previous career high of 105 points, reaching his 107th point on the night and finishing the season with 110 points.

Draisaitl Records 6 Assists in Game Against Senators

During the shortened 2021-22 season, the Oilers played in the North Division with the rest of the Canadian teams. They faced the Ottawa Senators a total of nine times, winning each game. While it’s always fun to see the Oilers handle teams with such ease, it made you feel almost sorry for the Senators after the Oilers won—until you remembered a Tkachuk brother played for them and then you were all for stacking up the wins.
Draisaitl set a career-high for points in a game with six helpers on Jan. 31, 2021, falling just one assist short of tying Wayne Gretzky and Billy Taylor Sr.’s record for the most assists in a single game.
He became the first Oilers player to record six assists in a game since Gretzky did it on April 9, 1987, and the first NHL player to do so since Eric Lindros of the Philadelphia Flyers on February 26, 1997, also against the Senators. Additionally, another fun fact is that the Oilers’ 8-5 victory was Stuart Skinner’s first career NHL win.

Draisaitl Drops Another 5-Point Night Against Senators

Draisaitl continued his dominance over the Senators during the 2020-21 season, scoring a hat trick and recording another five-point night against them on March 10, 2021, in a 7-1 win.
The Oilers’ star scored his hat trick in a spectacular fashion—he gained speed through the neutral zone and danced past the entire team for his first goal. He scored from his office on the power play for his second, and scored his hat trick goal off a drop pass from McDavid.
As the Oilers coasted to a 7-1 victory, marking their sixth consecutive win against the Senators, Brady Tkachuk expressed his frustration, saying, “Everyone hates losing, but to get blown out like that … it’s infuriating.”

Draisaitl Records His 2nd 5-Point Game Against the Predators

Draisaitl continued to be a force to be reckoned with against Nashville on Nov. 1, 2022. Despite former Predator and current Oiler Mattias Ekholm opening the scoring just 34 seconds into the game, Draisaitl led the comeback by sending a 50-foot pass right onto the tape of Evander Kane, who tied it up. The duo connected again less than three minutes later for Kane’s second of the night.
The big German assisted on a McDavid power-play goal and scored one himself on the man advantage. That said, the Oilers were leading by two goals when the Predators pulled their goalie with under two minutes left in the game. The Oilers gained possession of the puck and created a near 2-on-1 chance. Draisaitl unselfishly passed the puck to Kane, who completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal. With that assist, Draisaitl added his fifth point of the night, contributing to the Oilers’ 7-4 victory.

Another 5-Point Night Against… You Guessed It, the Nashville Predators

While Draisaitl’s new $112 million contract is a huge chunk of money, it wouldn’t be enough to actually own an NHL franchise. However, all things considered, it’s safe to say one thing he does own.. is the Nashville Predators when he plays them.
When the Oilers played the Predators on December 13, 2022, then-Oiler netminder Jack Campbell allowed an early goal less than two minutes into the game. However, Draisaitl quickly mounted a comeback, winning a faceoff that led to a Zach Hyman goal. The duo connected again five minutes later to take the lead, and Draisaitl added a power-play goal, totalling three points in the first period alone and five on the night, while Hyman also scored his first career hat trick.
Though the reason for Draisaitl’s success against Nashville isn’t entirely clear, it seems he just turns into a predator himself when he plays them, with 42 points in 26 career games against the Preds. That said, given how dominant Draisaitl has been, what’s your favourite moment from his career so far?
