The playoff race in the Pacific Division is on. Six teams are battling for three, most likely four, playoff spots with eight points separating Vegas, Anaheim, Edmonton, Seattle, San Jose and Los Angeles.
Let’s take a look at how many head-to-head matchups they have, who has the toughest and easiest remaining schedule and more.
Here are the standings right now.
Vegas has lost three in a row and is without Mark Stone. Anaheim and Seattle each gained six points on Vegas in the last 10 games to pull within one and three points, respectively, of the division lead. The San Jose Sharks gained three points on Vegas in that time, thanks to winning their last three games while Vegas lost their last three. Despite allowing 44 goals in their last 10 games, the Oilers still managed to go 5-5 and gain two points on Vegas. Los Angeles is the only team who lost ground to every team. They lost one point to Vegas, but seven points to Seattle and Anaheim and the Kings are on the verge of being unofficially out of the race.
They are five points back of Seattle for the second wildcard. The Kings need to start winning or they could easily be in too big of a hole by next Wednesday. Now is not the time to flounder, for any of these six clubs.
Let’s look at the remaining schedule.
Vegas: 21 games remaining with 12 at home, nine on the road and 13 against playoff teams.
Anaheim: 22 games to play with 11 at home, 10 on the road and only seven against playoff teams.
Edmonton: 20 games remaining with 12 at home, eight on the road and 12 against playoff teams.
Seattle: 22 games remaining with 12 at home, 10 on the road and nine against playoff teams.
San Jose: 23 games to play with 11 at home, 12 on the road and nine against playoff teams.
Los Angeles has 22 games left with 11 at home, 11 on the road and nine against playoff teams.
This outlines the games.
Red = road game. Bold red equals playoff opponent.
Black= home game. Bold black is playoff opponent.
Vegas plays the Oilers three times and Seattle twice.
The Ducks play the Sharks twice and the Oilers once.
The Oilers play Vegas (3x), the Sharks twice and Anaheim, Seattle and Los Angeles once.
Seattle has Vegas (2x) and Edmonton and LA once.
The Sharks play the Ducks and Oilers twice.
The Kings play Seattle and Edmonton once each.
The Oilers have eight games against these divisional foes, and arguably control their destiny even more because of having that many head-to-head matchups.

SCHEDULE NOTES…

— San Jose and LA have five sets of BTB games, while Seattle has three, Edmonton and Anaheim have two and Vegas has one.
— Seattle has a strange six-game, 14-day road trip to end March. The games are spread out, and too much downtime on the road is never great. Players get restless. The final game is in Edmonton.
— Seven of Vegas’ next eight games are against playoff teams. We will have a much better sense of their chances to win the division after their game against Utah on the 19th.
— Anaheim has a stretch starting March 8th through to April 3rd, where they play 14 games in 14 different cities. Lots of travel with a few pit stops at home for one game, before going back on the road. That is one of their most challenging stretches of the season.
— L.A. has a stretch of 10 games in 18 days with eight of them being on the road. The Kings are hanging on by their fingertips as it is, but those 10 games will determine if they have a chance or if they are done.
