TSN’s trade deadline list has grown to 25 now, and for the first time since 2006 (when the Oilers were so busy the mind boggles a decade later) Oilers fans can pop the hood and have a look. Let’s get started.

2006 DEADLINE

  • January 26—Traded Cory Cross and Jani Rita to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Dick Tarnstrom.
  • January 26—Traded rights to Tony Salmelainen to Chicago Blackhawks for Jaroslav Spacek.
  • March 8—Traded a first (Trevor Lewis) and a third (Spencer Mahacek) to the Minnesota Wild for Dwayne Roloson.
  • March 9—Traded Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and second (Milan Lucic) for Sergei Samsonov.
Helluva deadline by Kevin Lowe. No chance Peter Chiarelli will be that active this year, but there are some moves that make sense.

TSN TOP 25

I am not going to list all 25, many are not reasonable options for Edmonton. However, several of these names would be brilliant additions.
  • No. 1—RHD Kevin Shattenkirk. He would be a home-run acquisition, but it is too early in the window of opportunity for Edmonton. The assets required to acquire a rental like this player are going to be needed for depth for the Oilers over the next few seasons. A rental trade like Shattenkirk may be a viable option in a couple of years.
  • No. 2—C Matt Duchene. This is a player I think the Oilers should ask about, and pursue if available. He is $6M cap, but there are two years left, and Duchene would be an impact addition. Great faceoff man, an absolute bullet and would be able to push the river on a line away from McDavid.
  • No. 3—C Martin Hanzal. The price is likely to be dear, and the Coyotes are scouting the Chicago game tonight, so the point may be moot. That said, Hanzal is worth asking after, he would be a strong addition as 3C, taking a big load off RNH.
  • No. 6—R Radim Vrbata. He has some bonus issues (Edmonton won’t want to take on a big risk in terms of cap—this was covered this week by Elliotte Friedman in his 30 Thoughts) but would be an ideal solution to the extreme lack of veteran scoring on the starboard.
  • No. 9—L Evander Kane. Some real risk for sure, and his contract is a real Denver boot ($5.3M for one more year). Still, when he is healthy and on, this is a very good player.
  • No. 10—C Patrik Berglund. Looks like the Blues are taking off again, so may not be heavy sellers. That said, Berglund is an interesting player and could be a solid addition (depending on price tag).
  • No. 12—R Patrick Sharp. Although he has a NMC, I wonder if Sharp might be open to an opportunity with this emerging Oilers club.
  • No. 13—R Thomas Vanek. A nice contract is going to make this UFA a tougher get, with many teams in on him at the deadline. Worth the call, and a strong fit if Detroit decides not to sign him.
There are miles more names the Oilers might be interested in, I wrote about several over at Lowetide.
I think PC trades away one player and acquires two, totaling three trades. He will address center, probably goaltending, and I think he will tweak his roster by dealing off a contract Edmonton does not plan to retain. Thoughts?
