DFO Podcast: Tyson Barrie “fits the Oilers like a glove”

One of the hot topics in Oil Country over the past week has been the future of @Tyson Barrie.
After an ugly season with the Maple Leafs last year, Barrie inked a one-year, show-me deal with Edmonton and has found his groove offensively. Barrie leads all NHL defencemen with 30 points through 34 games and the question now becomes whether or not he’s part of the team’s long-term plans.
The Oilers have Barrie, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Adam Larsson, and Mike Smith set to hit the free-agent market this summer while Kailer Yamamoto and Jujhar Khaira are restricted free-agents. Edmonton also has two good, young right-handed defenders in Ethan Bear and Evan Bouchard jockeying for more playing time, so Ken Holland has an interesting decision on his hand.
On the DFO Rundown, Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli talked about whether or not the Oilers should ink Barrie to a new deal after this season…
YAREMCHUK: Last Buy or Sell question of the week. I talked about him off the top after his performance this week against the Calgary Flames. Tyson Barrie, heard on Insider Trading that Ken Holland might start some negotiations with him. I’m not sure if there’s a fit here next year. I think Barrie might price himself out of the range of the Edmonton Oilers. I’m saying Barrie will not be an Oiler next year. What do you say?GREGOR: Here’s the thing. Tyson Barrie, in the last eight years in the NHL, is the seventh-highest scoring defenceman in the league. He’s been an elite point producer everywhere he goes. Now he’s teamed up in Edmonton with the best two scorers in the league. He’s an elite offensive guy. I get that he isn’t great defensively so I’m not going to pay him. But if I can get Tyson Barrie at three years between $5 to $5.5 million, I would sign that. It’s all about term for me. I don’t know Tyson Barrie well enough to say if he’s looking for a big payday. He’s made good money but in a flat cap, are teams going to grossly overpay him? I don’t think so. I think there is a fit for the Oilers but it depends on term. Even if I had to squeeze up to $6 million, I wouldn’t love it, but if I could get him on a three-year term, I would punch that ticket. Tyson Barrie has been proven for years to be an elite puck-moving defenceman.SERAVALLI: 100 percent agree. I think he’s fit like a glove. I’ve always thought Barrie would fit like a glove going back to when he was available for trade from the Colorado Avalanche. Elite point producer, exactly what the Oilers needed on their power-play, fits so well with the scorers that they have. And he’s got his confidence back. That was the biggest thing. That was my question mark, could he find a way to get that confidence back, and he has. When someone fits, and he’s young enough, terms is going to be everything, but I think he stays.
