The Edmonton Oilers now have a point in their last four games.
After a 4-3 shootout loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, the Oilers began a two-game road trip with their dads in tow, beginning their first matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. It was a goaltender battle, but the Oilers eventually came out on top with a 4-1 win to move their season record to 23-16-7. Let’s take a look at what went on in this one.
With about five minutes left in the first period, the Oilers were the first to get on the board. Evan Bouchard drove in from the point and was given a ton of room to drive the net. Instead of shooting, he passed it to Zach Hyman, who was battling a Blackhawk (not the helicopter) on the opposite post. It was a pretty easy tap-in for the Oilers’ winger.
Very early into the second period, the Oilers took a 2-0 lead. Once again, Bouchard drove in from the point as he laid it off for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The longest tenured Oilers’ shot was stopped, but Bouchard knocked the puck down from behind the net and banked it off the Blackhawks’ netminder to extend their lead.

Connor Ingram was finally beaten with about five minutes left in the third period. The puck took a crazy bounce as the Oilers defended their blue line, popping out to Wyatt Kaiser. His shot was stopped by Ingram, but the rebound landed on the stick of Tyler Bertuzzi to cut the Oilers’ lead in half.

Bouchard capped off a very strong game with an empty net goal with under a minute left in the game, his 11th of the season. Leon Draisaitl scored on what was essentially a turn over, as Vasily Podkolzin forced a turnover with a strong forecheck. With Spencer Knight out of the net, Draisaitl buried it for his 24th of the season.

Takeaways…
Connor Ingram may not have picked up the shutout, but he had a fantastic game. Not only did he stop 29 of 30 shots for a.967 save percentage, but he also made three or four massive stops after the Oilers turned it over. In all but one of Ingram’s seven games, he’s finished with a save percentage of .900 or above. Blackhawks’ netminder Spencer Knight also had a strong game, stopping 32 of 35 shots with a bunch of huge saves.

The Oilers’ best skater in this game was Evan Bouchard. He played an Oiler-high 24 minutes and 31 seconds in this game, just two seconds fewer than the game’s leader. On top of that, he scored twice and picked up an assist as he was a +3. Mattias Ekholm was also a +3.
Connor McDavid, who was also a +3, extended his point streak to 19 games, picking up an assist on Zach Hyman’s 14th goal of the season. For good measure, he picked up his 50th assist on Bouchard’s first goal of the game. Leon Draisaitl extended his point-streak against the Blackhawks to 20 games with that late freebie.
The Oilers’ fourth line had another strong game, according to Natural Stat Trick. In their six minutes and 16 seconds of time on ice during five-on-five, Trent Frederic, Curtis Lazar, and Mattias Janmark out shot opposition six to two, owning 65.32 percent of the expected goal share. The second line and first line also had an expected goal share over at least 53 percent.
Last game, the Oilers’ third line of Isaac Howard, Jack Roslovic, and Matthew Savoie had a tough game. With Howard sitting on Monday, Andrew Mangiapane filled in, and the trio owning 48.46 percent of the expected goal share during five-on-five action. That said, Savoie and Roslovic have found some chemistry over these last few games.
In their alternate jerseys, the Oilers are now 5-0. In those five wins, they’ve out-scored opposition 30-10. Their next game with the cream jerseys is on Tuesday on the road against the Nashville Predators, and the last time they’ll wear them is on Jan. 31.
That game against the Predators is on Tuesday at 6:00 PM MT. Afterwards, they’ll return for a game on Thursday, hit the road briefly to face the Vancouver Canucks, before an eight-game home stand.
