The Day After 78.0: Oilers blow multiple leads before falling to Mammoth in overtime

After putting together a season-high five-game winning streak, the Oilers have now dropped back-to-back games, surrendering 11 goals in the process.
Edmonton fell 5-1 at home to Vegas on Saturday, then blew multiple leads in a 6-5 overtime loss in Utah on Tuesday. The Oilers led 3-1 after the first period, 4-3 late in the second, and 5-4 early in the third.
The Mammoth flipped the game in the middle frame with three goals, capped by a shorthanded marker from Nick Schmaltz with 36 seconds left in the period. Even after the Oilers regained the lead in the third, Utah kept pressing and eventually found the equalizer when Alex Kerfoot deflected a Sean Durzi point shot past Tristan Jarry.
It took just 33 seconds of three-on-three overtime for Clayton Keller to find the back of the net and seal the win.
Despite getting goals from five different players, the Oilers couldn’t contain Utah’s offence. Tristan Jarry allowed six goals on 31 shots for an .806 save percentage, unable to make a big stop behind a leaky defence.
These two losses have allowed the Golden Knights to pull into a tie with Edmonton for first place in the Pacific Division. Both teams sit at 88 points through 78 games, with the Oilers holding the tiebreaker for now with two more regulation wins than Vegas.
The Ducks, who held the top spot just weeks ago, are now spiralling on a six-game losing streak. Anaheim sits one point back of Edmonton and Vegas with the same number of games played.
What they said…
Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch on the multiple blown leads against Utah…
“We had a few leads tonight, and they responded quickly. The one lead they had, we responded right away too. It was a game neither team was able to run away with.“It was nice to see the offence was there and we were able to score, but we gave up too many chances.”
Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse on the importance of banking points down the stretch…
“That’s the most important part of this time of year. We want to get that ‘X’ beside our name and into the playoffs by collecting points every night. That’s the main focus for us.“The result wasn’t what we wanted, but we got something out of it. Now we have to make sure we don’t let it slip tomorrow night.”
Oilers forward Colton Dach on scoring after missing one month with an injury…
“It felt good to be back with the guys, back in the room, and contributing. But at the end of the day, we need to find a way to get the two points.”
Utah head coach André Tourigny on his team’s comeback win…
“Really proud of the way we stayed with it. The group stayed in the moment and showed a lot of resilience. Really proud of them.”
Mammoth captain Clayton Keller on Utah’s finding their game in the third period…
“We had a big push in the third and were playing our style. We got that goal and just kept pressing. We didn’t sit back.“It’s a step in the right direction, and with games left, it’s a big win for us.”
Mammoth forward Nick Schmaltz on the importance of beating a quality opponent…
“We know where we stand and where they stand. These points are huge. We want to get that ‘X’ beside our name as soon as we can.“We’re battling every night, and getting two points against a team like that is big.”
Up next…
The Oilers will be right back in action Wednesday in San Jose for the second half of a back-to-back. After that, they’ll head to Los Angeles to face the Kings on Saturday afternoon.
Edmonton will close out the regular season at home next week, hosting Colorado on Monday and Vancouver in the finale on Thursday.
