The Edmonton Oilers no longer control their fate to finish first in the Pacific Division.
On Saturday afternoon, the Oilers played their final road game of the season, ending a three-game road trip against the Los Angeles Kings. The low-scoring affair saw just one goal, as the Kings defeated the Oilers 1-0. Let’s take a look at what went on in this one.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Oilers allowed the first goal. Evan Bouchard received a pass from Mattias Ekholm at the point. Artemi Panarin put immediate pressure on the Oilers’ defender, forcing a turnover for a breakaway. He beat Connor Ingram with a forehand shot from the hash marks.
This game is best described as a cagey affair, a typical Kings’ game. There were plenty of hard hits and some chipiness, but not a whole lot of scoring through 40 minutes. Late in the second, the Kings had a couple of chances, but Ingram made two terrific saves, one with the blocker, one with the glove.
Both teams had their chances in the third period, but the Oilers were unable to beat Kings’ netminder Anton Forsberg.

Takeaways…
Saturday’s game had a playoff-type feel to it. Not only were both teams defensively sound, but the officials let the two teams in what was a chippy affair. Between the two hits, they had 57 hits, 27 for the Oilers and 30 for the Kings. That said, it was a pretty poor game for the officials.
The Oilers’ best player was Colton Dach. He landed six of the Oilers hits and had numerous chances throughout the game. He and Trent Frederic have formed some chemistry, as Frederic has been far more physical when he’s alongside Dach. That may be a solid fourth line in the postseason.
It’s not easy to win while missing two of your three best forwards. Connor McDavid was certainly trying, but the Kings were all over him throughout the game. Hopefully, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman return for Game 1, whenever that is.
In the third period of Wednesday’s game against the San Jose Sharks, Jason Dickinson took a shot off the leg and needed help down the tunnel. The injury bug hit again, as Max Jones appeared to injure something while going for a hit. Like Dickinson, he had to be helped off the ice, and it didn’t look good.
Evan Bouchard had another tough game, just like he did on Wednesday. The Kings’ opening goal was directly on him, as he should’ve just thrown it down low instead of trying to beat Artemi Panarin.
Connor Ingram allowed that breakaway goal, but he was solid throughout the game and terrific when he needed to be. Overall, he stopped 19 of 20 shots for a .950 save percentage. Add in a couple of big saves, and he did enough to give the Oilers a chance to win.
Following the loss, the Oilers sit first in the Pacific Division, but their destiny is no longer in their hands. The Vegas Golden Knights are in action on Saturday evening, while the Ducks play their 80th game on Sunday. If the Knights win on Saturday or the Ducks win on Sunday, the Oilers won’t be in the top spot the next time they play.
With the loss, the Oilers haven’t clinched just yet, but that can change at some point on Saturday. This was their final road game of the regular season, as their two remaining games are at home. The first of which is against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday at 7:30 p.m. MT.
