On the night that Leon Draisaitl celebrated his 1,000th National Hockey League point, Connor McDavid surpassed a career best.
Coming into Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings, McDavid had a 17-game point streak, the third time he’s reached that milestone. Over those 17 games, McDavid has 18 goals and 41 points.
Well, McDavid’s point streak now sits at 18 thanks to a game-tying power play goal midway through the third period. He was given just far too much time in the slot, beating the Los Angeles Kings’ netminder for his 30th goal of the season.
McDavid’s other two 17-game point streaks came in the early 2020s. From Oct. 21 until Nov. 20, McDavid picked up 12 goals and 32 points. Early into the 2022-23 season, McDavid scored 16 goals and 37 points in 17 games from Nov. 26 until December 30th, 2022.
Of active players, his 42 points in this point is the third-most in any player during a point streak. Patrick Kane had 43 points over a 20 game point streak in early 2019, and Sidney Crosby had 50 points in a 25-game point streak early into the 2010-11 season. If he were to keep the pace he’s had over his last 17 games, he’d have 48 points in 20 games and 60 points in 25 games.
Now, if McDavid were to keep that pace over a full 82-game season, he’d finish with 197 points. This is easily the best stretch he’s been on in his career, at least in the regular season. Over the 17 prior games, McDavid has had three four-point games, as well as a five-point game.
Is it the longest point streak of all time? Not even close. There are 10 active players with a point streak of 18 games or more, including former Oilers Taylor Hall and Corey Perry. Leon Draisaitl also had an 18-game point streak in 2024-25. The largest point streak of any active player belongs to Kane, where he scored 16 goals and 40 points in 26 games, the 11th-longest point streak.
As you can imagine, the record belongs to Wayne Gretzky. From the start of the 1983-84 season until Jan. 27, 1984, Gretzky had a 51-game point streak where he scored 61 goals and 153 points. It was one of five times Gretzky had a point-streak of 25 games
We’ll see how much longer McDavid can keep this point streak up.
