Leon Draisaitl’s done it, scoring his 1,000th point on Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, becoming the fifth player in Edmonton Oilers history to hit the century mark with the club.
Hitting the mark took him a year longer than Connor McDavid, who hit the mark in Nov. 2024 on a goal set up by Draisaitl. It was only fitting that McDavid would be involved in Draisaitl’s 1,000th, as the pair got assists on a first-period Zach Hyman goal.
Draisaitl’s first point came on October 15th, 2014, when, in his fourth game, he set up Mark Fayne for a first-period goal against the Arizona Coyotes. That assist for Fayne’s goal would be the only time the two connected on a goal, and it would take another 4,080 days for Draisaitl to score 999 more.
But across those 4,080 days, Draisaitl has been the model of consistency. It took a few years for Draisaitl to hit a ceiling nobody expected, even though he was productive in his early years, scoring 75 goals and 207 points in 269 games across his first four seasons, the first of which saw him return to the WHL and take the Kelowna Rockets on a run to the Memorial Cup.
Over the past eight years, he has established himself as one of the best players of this generation, scoring 341 goals and 796 points in 555 games. In fact, he’s tied for the most goals scored leading into Thursday night’s games, while sitting fifth in assists and second in points to only McDavid.
Throughout his career, there’s been a long list of players who have helped Draisaitl reach 1,000 points, but perhaps none more than McDavid, who has either scored a goal assisted by Draisaitl, or helped set up a Draisaitl goal, doing so 372 times — 223 of which have seen 97 set up 29.
It’s McDavid and then everybody else when it comes to Draisaitl’s set-up man, with the next closest player, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, sitting 104 assists back of the Oilers’ captain. Evan Bouchard comes in third, with 47 assists — 57 back of Nugent-Hopkins, while Darnell Nurse comes in fourth with 42 assists.
One thing that’s key in Draisaitl’s success has been the continuity of some of these top guys. McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins and Nurse have all been in Edmonton for nearly as long, or longer than he has.
There’s some fun names to look back on this list, too. Tyson Barrie was the power play quarterback for a few years, so it makes sense he’s high up on that like, either.
Some of my favourite “remember him?” guys on the list: Joseph Gambardella, Yohann Autivu, Ryan Strome, and Joel Persson.
Once again: McDavid then everybody else. Draisaitl has been there with nearly three times as many assists as the next player to have the most assists for McDavid, but that’s not the only player Draisaitl has set up a lot. Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins, Nurse and Bouchard also round out the top five, with Draisaitl setting them up plenty over his career.
Some more fun names to look back at: Kailer Yamamoto, Pat Maroon, Alex Chiasson, James Neal, Josh Currie and Pontus Aberg.
Don’t quote me on this, but I’d be willing to bet that Jacob Markström, Connor Hellebuyck, and Thatcher Demko have nightmares every night before they face the Oilers. John Gibson likely did too, but he’s since been traded out of the Western Conference. Draisaitl has wreaked havoc on some of these Western Conference goaltenders.
Fun names to look back on: Kari Lehtonen, Peter Budaj, Roberto Luongo, and Tukka Rask.
