That’s the percentage that NHL insider puts on future Hall of Fame goaltender Marc-André Fleury lacing the skates up once again, and if he were to, the Edmonton Oilers could be one of the front runners.
Seravalli made the comments about Fleury’s future on Monday morning radio hit with Sports 1440’s Kevin Karius.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Alex Lyon, right?” said Seravalli. “I’d have to think that one name that the Edmonton Oilers are thinking about today in this circumstance is Marc-André Fleury.
“(He spent) another hour and a half on the ice last week with Minnesota Wild scratches, (he) played in that preseason game earlier this year with the Pittsburgh Penguins. I think he’s got the itch to keep playing, and I think for a guy who really has made a home in Minnesota, there’s no room for him there with Wallstedt and Gustavsson. If he’s going to come back, it’s going to be with a team that has an authentic chance to win. And that’s got the Oilers written all over it.”
Fleury retired after last season, taking a farewell tour through the NHL, and even played for Team Canada at the World Championships last spring, appearing in three games, posting a 2-1 record, a .944 save percentage and a 0.97 goals against average
And while his numbers there were solid, his best NHL days appeared to be behind him. The 41-year-old appeared in 66 games over the last two seasons for the Wild, posting a 31-24-6 record, a .896 save percentage and a 2.96 goals against average.
He notched quality starts in 55 percent of his 58 starts, but according to Evolving Hockey, he posted a -18.24 goals saved above expected mark which, among 75 goalies with over 20 games played across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, ranked 73rd.
Fleury, of course, was one of the best goaltenders in his prime, winning three Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, a Vezina Trophy and a Jennings Trophy and a Gold Medal at the 2010 Olympics as the third goaltender. He sits second all-time in games played and wins.
The Oilers goaltending department has been a major storyline in the past year, with the team making a big move nearly two weeks ago, trading Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Tristan Jarry. He, however, was injured in his third start with the team, resorting to them calling up Connor Ingram from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
