Times are tough in Winnipeg.
Last year’s Central Division champions, who cruised through the regular season to a 56-22-4 record, have fallen off a cliff.
The Oilers handed the Jets their 11th straight loss Thursday night at Canada Life Centre. After the home side jumped out to a 3-1 first-period lead, Edmonton flipped the script, scoring three unanswered goals and dominating the final 40 minutes to claim a 4-3 victory.
Over the second and third periods, the Oilers held the Jets to just five shots on goal while peppering reigning Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck with 23 shots of their own.
Connor McDavid scored in the final minute of the second frame to pull Edmonton within one. The goal extended the captain’s point streak to 17 games. Midway through the third, Zach Hyman wired a shot over Hellebuyck’s shoulder to knot the score at 3-3. Not long after, the Oilers went to the man advantage, and Evan Bouchard sniped what proved to be the game-winner from the high slot.
The turning point for Edmonton came in the latter part of the second period.
Trent Frederic, who’s been relegated to the press box multiple times in recent weeks, dropped the gloves with towering defender Logan Stanley. Though Stanley got the better of Frederic in the bout, the Oilers used it as a rallying point to seize momentum and steal two points from Winnipeg.
The win keeps the Oilers tied for first place in the Pacific Division with the Golden Knights, though Vegas has two games in hand on Edmonton. Winnipeg, meanwhile, sits dead last in the NHL standings with a 15-22-5 record.

What they said…

Evan Bouchard on Trent Frederic’s fight being a turning point for Edmonton…
“They came out hard. They’re a desperate team. We started getting it together later in the game. Big fight for (Frederic) to get us going (late in the second). I think that really rallied us together.”
Winnipeg head coach Scott Arneil on his team’s 11-game losing streak…
“I think we’re all getting mental right now in the sense that it’s in everybody’s head. But at the end of the day, we have a job to do. We have to play, and our best players have to be our best players in a game like that. Our role players have to play their roles. I don’t care what the scenario is, when you’re out on the ice, you’re playing a game, something you’ve done your whole life, and we’re in a situation like that, however you go about it, you have to find a way to get yourself over the hump.”
Zach Hyman on the Oilers capitalizing on a struggling opponent…
“We’ve all been in this situation that the Jets are in. When you’re not winning games, it’s hard to close a game out.”
Winnipeg forward Tanner Pearson on the Jets looking for a way out of their skid…
“It just seems like right now, that wall is 100 feet high. We’ve got to knock it down with an ax or something. We’ve got to get there. I think you’re just searching for that one, right? It’s not easy. Everyone is trying to do the same thing in this league. Everyone is trying to win.”
Head coach Kris Knoblauch on the Oilers rallying for a victory on the road…
“Aside from about five minutes at the end of the first period, I thought we played pretty well. I liked the fact that we were down 3-1 and we stuck with it. We didn’t generate very much in the second period, but we still pushed and were finally able to get a second goal at the end of the second period.”

Up next…

The Oilers will return home for a quick pit stop on Saturday, hosting the Los Angeles Kings on Hockey Night in Canada. After that, they’ll hit the road for a back-to-back against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators on Monday and Tuesday.
