Edmonton Oilers winger Evander Kane will remain on the Long-Term Injured Reserve through the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season, the club announced Friday.
Kane, 33, hasn’t played this year for the team after undergoing abdominal surgery in September and a knee surgery in January. He appeared in 77 regular season games for the team last year, scoring 24 goals and 44 points, adding another four goals and eight points in 20 playoff games.

The Oilers say Kane will continue his rehabilitation in Edmonton “under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.”
The rugged winger’s game was affected last year due to injury, struggling in the playoffs and eventually getting shut down for the final five games of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers. It was later revealed Kane’s surgery involved fixing two torn lower abdominal muscles and two hernias. Kane attempted to rehabilitate the injuries last summer, but opinions from multiple doctors saw he and the team resort to the surgery.
With Kane on the LTIR, the Oilers were able to use his salary to make additions to the active roster, picking up forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones from the Boston Bruins Tuesday, and defenceman Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks when the clock struck midnight Friday. Those followed the in-season waiver claim of Kasperi Kapanen from the St. Louis Blues, as well as the signing of free agent defenceman John Klingberg.
Kane will be eligible to return to the Oilers lineup when the playoffs start, if he’s healthy enough to do so. Earlier this week, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Kane had a desire to play regular season games ahead of the playoffs, but that now won’t be the case.
The Oilers regular season continues Saturday night when they host the Dallas Stars, who acquired Carolina Hurricanes winger Mikko Rantanen on Friday.
