‘Ran another one out of town’: Oilers fans react to Darnell Nurse’s trade request

Some Edmonton Oilers fans used to pray for times like this. News dropped Thursday afternoon when Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Mark Spector reported that Darnell Nurse had requested a trade out of Edmonton, that it’s time for a fresh start for the defenceman.
Fans and media alike took to social media instantly to share their thoughts on Nurse giving the Oilers his blessing to find him a new home.
It’s sad when a portion of the fan base and media treat a player, good person and loyal soldier, so poorly. Then those same people will chirp how terrible Babcock is… hypocrites. They’re just as bad. Choose a lane. – Shannon Baerwald via XPeople are going to try to put aside how bad Nurse actually was the last 3 years. Not having games on will do that. But he was a number 5D at the most with a ridiculous cap hit. Even if you have to retain a couple mil he is 100 per cent replaceable, and quite easily for that matter. – Zinner2dot1 via XHope you “fans” are happy. Ran another one out of town. I hope he does get a good, fresh start. – Kenny Mac via XBy all accounts, Nurse seems like a good guy, and you could argue I was harsh on him as a player at times. Nevertheless, Ken Holland cost 97 (at least) two cups by signing that contract, which will go down as the worst in Oilers history. It is *well* past the time to move on. – NHL_Sid via XAn overpaid depth defenceman with NMC that should see EDM pay assets to move, but will have Chevy spending? Welcome to Winnipeg, Nate Schmidt 2.0 – NikLynam via XDarnell Nurse isn’t all too bad, just overpaid by a good couple million, maybe a little more, but shhh. Bad contract, everyone knows it. But Darnell was always good to the Edmonton community and shouldn’t get the hate he’s been receiving. Best of luck to Darnell, wherever he goes. – Jeffery Ade via XHonestly, kind of bittersweet :/ His impact as simply a human on both the Oilers and this city will forever be remembered! Props to his agent for getting him that deal though. – Megan Albu via X
There are definitely been mixed emotions around the Oilers fanbase. One side sees the value he brought to the ice and understands he was overpaid. Not many can blame him for signing that anchor of a contract worth $9.25 million. There’s a portion of Oilers fans who have viewed him as a good soldier and who didn’t think he deserved the blame and disrespect he received during his tenure with the club.
It’s time for sure and a good move for both parties I never had a problem with him signing a deal he was offered, we all would, it just handcuffed the team. Not his fault, that’s on the front office. He had more good moments than bad IMO. I wish him well. – Warren Dean via XYou won’t count me as someone dancing on Nurse’s grave on the way out of town. He was a very good Oiler for a long time, and it’s not his fault Ken Holland gave him the bag. We’d all sign that deal too. – Baggedmilk via XHopin SJ is on that list of 3-5. Huge amount of cap, under the floor, and don’t need to worry about anyone for a few years. They need D. The return may not be fantastic but if we can get rid of the whole contract and not give up capital it be a win. – Trevor Airdrie via FacebookHe needs to submit a 31 team list to be able to trade. – Frank Boudreau via FacebookCleaning up the trash…himself lol. Good riddance its finally happeningChristmas has come early – Jen Grassl via FacebookHe’s a good team player and good for Edmonton. Too bad he didn’t live up to his contract. Kinda sad. Like stu sad but know it must be done. – Donna B Good via FacebookYou’ll be missed a great oiler just not worth 9.5mil if he would’ve signed for 7mil no one would be complaining about him. – Sway_zee_zwayz via InstagramDarnell nurse you will be remembered and thanked when the oilers win a cup now. – Hamza.cheems via InstagramI’ll be thanking nurse when we win a cup this year. – n.clacken via InstagramThe problem with this, IMO, is that Nurse will play to his abilities once leaving. And he’s good when he’s at that level. – Jerryjs212 via Instagram
Over the past months, it felt like there was more smoke than usual around Nurse’s name. The more the idea of a trade out of Edmonton began to float around from NHL insiders, the more it felt like the writing was on the wall for his future.
Could Ken Holland bail the Oilers out of one of his worst decisions as Oilers GM? It is possible, after David Pagnotta reported the Kings are a team Nurse would be open being traded to.
