NHL hockey is back.
For those like me who consumed as much Olympic hockey is possible, I’m bracing myself for a um… change in pace. Nonetheless, the Edmonton Oilers kick off the stretch run of their season late tonight, squaring off with an Anaheim Ducks team nipping at their heels in the Pacific Division standings.
- Matt Savoie was recalled by the Oilers on Wednesday morning. He’s expected to be in the lineup, as too is Adam Henrique, according to Jason Gregor. He returns after missing the last 15 games due to injury.
- Henrique spoke with Jason Gregor in a one-on-one, talking about how he’s looking to contribute more. If he’s activated from LTIR ahead of tonight’s game, now would be a great chance to kick things off offensively. In four games against the Ducks since the Oilers acquired him, he’s scored a goal and two points with five shots on goal. Both points came in the most recent game, on April 7th, 2025, scoring the opening goal of the game and helping set up Jeff Skinner for the Oilers’ second goal of the night in a 3-2 loss.
- Returning from breaks hasn’t always been kind to the Oilers. In the McDavid era, the team has a 13-24 record in their first game back from a break of three or more days, winning just 35.1 per cent of those games. Last year the Oilers sputtered in a 0-4 stretch on a road trip, losing 6-3 to the Philadelphia Flyers, 7-3 to the Washington Capitals, 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning and 4-3 to the Florida Panthers, getting outscored 21-10. They would snap the skid in their last game of the trip, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1. The Oilers would go 14-8-1 in their final 23 games of the season after that.
- A similar skid can’t be afforded for the Oilers this time around. Heading into tonight’s game, the Oilers sit four points back of the Vegas Golden Knights for the Pacific Division lead, but have the Ducks one point back, the L.A. Kings four points back, and the San Jose Sharks six points back. Wins against the Ducks and Kings will be important tonight and tomorrow.
- These two teams met on January 26th in Edmonton, with the Oilers winning 7-4. The Ducks are one of the Pacific teams the Oilers play just three times, with the final meeting coming on March 28th in Edmonton.
- Many Oilers have had success against the Ducks in recent years. Connor McDavid has a point in 16 of his last 17 against them, scoring 13 goals and 28 points, with points in 25 of his last 27, too. Leon Draisaitl has a point in eight straight, scoring seven goals and 11 assists, while Zach Hyman has 14 points, eight goals and six assists, in his last 11 games against the Ducks. Evan Bouchard, meanwhile, has points in nine straight, with a goal and 10 assists.
