Oilers injury update: Regula and Janmark ahead of Savoie and Andersen in rehab timeline

The Edmonton Oilers are about to start training camp without two key pieces of their lineup.

Returning forward Matt Savoie and newcomer netminder Frederik Andersen will not skate at camp, said general manager Stan Bowman on Wednesday morning, adding there is no time frame for their return.

In fact, two other Oilers are closer to returning as they rehab from off-season surgery, as Alec Regula and Mattias Janmark are both on the mend.

“Regula and Janmark are closer to playing just because they’re going to be skating,” said Bowman to begin his press conference. “[Andersen] and Savoie will not be skating. But I don’t have a [time frame] on any of those players.”

Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer said he believes that Savoie’s injury is lower-body. There’s been a belief that a possible return is late October. His absence from the penalty-kill was a key driver in the Oilers signing Alex Formenton, who has familiarity with assistant coach D.J. Smith from their time together in Ottawa.

Meanwhile, with Andersen, it isn’t a new injury, Bowman confirmed a couple of weeks ago. He suffered a knee injury during the Stanley Cup final that the team was aware of, and Andersen spoke about shortly after being signed in Edmonton back in July.

“I think that was part of our game plan going in, knowing that he is a bit older, and he’s had a few injuries before,” said Bowman.

“We weren’t expecting him to carry the big load all year. So we have Tristan Jarry and we have Devon Levi as well. They’re both going to be guys getting a great opportunity here starting the year.”

Mattias Janmark’s shoulder recovery continues after having surgery in March. He last played on Feb. 25, suiting up for 43 games in 2025–26, scoring 1 goal and 8 points.

Alec Regula has dealt with serious lower-body injuries in the past, missing the entire 2024–25 season. He played 29 games with the Oilers last year and 20 more in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors. No word on the procedure he underwent this off-season, but it is encouraging to hear that he’s expected to skate sooner rather than later.
