The Day After 32.0: Oilers Lay It On The Line as McDavid, Draisaitl lift them over Leafs

The helmet and stick didn’t match the jersey, but the pads certainly did.
Tristan Jarry’s Frankenstein uniform was an odd sight to see between the Edmonton Oilers’ pipes Saturday night, but his play certainly wasn’t. After all, tonight’s game was moreso about him getting his feet wet than anything else, and the Oilers running the score up in their 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs certainly helped.
“It’s always a little bit harder wearing new gear,” said Jarry after the game. “You’re not really used to it, but I think it was kind of something I just wanted to jump into and just get it going.”
As for his first 24 hours as an Oiler? A whirlwind.
“It’s obviously a lot of emotions,” he said. “You never really think that this would happen, and you’re obviously shocked when it does.
“The last game I played was in Pittsburgh, so you never really think that’s going to end. But to be here and to be a part of this group, it’s special.”
Jarry would finish with a .893 save percentage, allowing three goals against on 28 shots, while turning aside 1.18 goals above expected, according to Evolving Hockey. Toronto never had one long, extended push in the game, but rather their chances here and there, including 11 shots from high-danger areas, two of which went in.
His first goal against, coming late in the first, was off a Scott Laughton rebound that Easton Cowan was able to bang in, and the second, early in the second, was a story Oilers fans know all too well: five Oilers standing around as the opposing team rips the puck around, before it gets buried past a helpless goaltender. The third, meanwhile, came with under a minute left in the game, as Jarry couldn’t see the cross-ice pass through a slew of bodies.
Helping Jarry, of course, was another offensive explosion from the Oilers. Two goals and three points from McDavid. Three assists from Draisaitl. A pair of Vasily Podkolzin goals. You know, the usual these days.
“Anytime you add somebody to the team, (it) adds a little juice, a little excitement to the group and, you know, Spencer (Stastney) and Tristan played really well tonight, played really well for us,” said Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch. “And, you know, hopefully we can continue building on that.
“I thought our team played well and of course Leon and Connor took over and was part of the scoring and really got us on the score sheet. But I’m very happy with the group.”
Edmonton’s 4-0 win over the Seattle Kraken on Nov. 29 will likely be looked to as the Oilers’ turning point in the season. They’ve gone 5-1-1 since, outscoring the opposition 21-11 at five-on-five, and are back controlling key statistics like expected goal share (55 percent) and high-danger scoring chance share (56.7 percent). In both instances, the Oilers are generating more and allowing less than they had in the early parts of the season.
At the very least, kicking off their five-game road trip with a blowout win like this is a great way to get things going.
The Oilers will take the quick trip to Montreal to face off against the Canadiens tonight, before heading to Pittsburgh to visit the Penguins. They’ll close it out Thursday against the Boston Bruins and Saturday against Quinn Hughes’ Minnesota Wild, before returning home.
