The Edmonton Oilers have loaned defenceman Riley Stillman to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, the club announced Saturday.
Stillman, 27, was recalled by the team on December 12th, drawing in for four games, most recently Thursday’s against the Winnipeg Jets. He didn’t notch any points, but averaged 12 minutes and two seconds of ice-time, laying seven hits, taking one shot, and blocking four.
The Oilers outscored the opposition 2-1 in his 48 minutes at five-on-five, but the team got dominated in those minutes in terms of shot share, scoring chance share and high-danger scoring chance share.
He was placed on waivers as the pre-season winded down in October to join the Condors, and has appeared in 22 games for the Condors this season, scoring two goals and seven points, taking 21 shots on goal. This summer, the Oilers signed him to a two-year contract carrying a $775,000 cap hit.
Stillman’s demotion indicates the team is close to activating Jake Walman from the Long-Term Injured Reserve, as the Oilers now have just six defencemen on the active roster. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch indicated this week that Walman was roughly a week away from returning, highlighting Monday and Tuesday games against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators as possible dates.
With Adam Henrique out of the Oilers’ lineup until after the Olympic Break, the Oilers can move him to the Long-Term Injured Reserve, opening up enough cap space for the team to activate not just Walman, but Tristan Jarry from the LTIR, too.
Jarry joined the Oilers for a full skate Saturday morning ahead of hosting the Los Angeles Kings tonight, and Knoblauch indicated the goaltender is expected to return to the lineup sometime this week.
Kris Knoblauch shares Tristan Jarry’s return can come this upcoming week. #Oilers
Jarry appeared in three games for the Oilers after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins, but was injured partway through his third start on December 18th, keeping him out of the lineup since. The Oilers will have a tough decision to make between placing Calvin Pickard or Connor Ingram on waivers, hoping either would be able to sneak through the wire to join the Condors.
