After the Edmonton Oilers disappointingly blew a 2-0 lead on Friday, they were able to get back into the win column.
On Sunday, the Oilers returned home to host the Nashville Predators, defeating them 3-1 to move to 3-1-1 in their last five games. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!
Less than two minutes into the game, Nick Perbix received a holding penalty, giving the league’s best power play an opportunity. The second unit began the man advantage, but it was the first unit scoring just over three minutes into the game to give the Oilers an early lead. It was a pretty typical power-play goal from Leon Draisaitl, receiving a cross-ice pass from McDavid. However, his 35th goal of the season didn’t come thanks to a one-timer — instead, he patiently waited and beat the netminder with a wrist shot.
That was Draisaitl’s 28th goal in his last 20 games against the Predators, but played just over three minutes. The German forward received a hit from Ozzy Wiesblatt along the bench and went down the tunnel. He took two shifts late in the first period, but was ruled out of the game.
Wiesblatt drew two penalties as the Oilers were trying to get back at him, which disrupted the rhythm of the game for them in the first period. They dominated when they weren’t in the box, and eventually took a 2-0 lead early in the first period. Speed was the reason for the goal, as Connor McDavid received a breakout pass, with Matthew Savoie using his speed to catch up with him for a two-on-one. A quick pass and a quick shot made it 2-0 for the Oilers.

Five minutes into the third period, the Predators finally got on the scoreboard. Darnell Nurse rang the puck around the boards to no one in particular, ending on the stick of a Predators defenceman. After a D-to-D pass, Nic Hague found Fedor Svechkov above the slot, and his shot took a funky deflection and beat Connor Ingram to make it 2-1. The Oilers iced the game with an empty-net goal courtesy of Zach Hyman.

Takeaways…
Starting with Draisaitl, he took a hit in the first period from Wiesblatt and spent some time down the tunnel. While he returned late in the period, he was ruled out for the rest of the game heading into the second period. It’ll be a big blow for the Oilers if he’s out for any amount of time.
Two of the four power plays that the Predators received in this game were drawn by Wiesblatt. Following the hit on Draisaitl, Vasily Podkolzin attempted to fight him, and ended up fighting Nic Hague instead, while Kasperi Kapanen slashed Wiesblatt. Eight minutes later, Trent Frederic roughed him up and headed to the box. Thankfully, the Oilers killed off both penalties as they went 4-for-4 on the kill.
Those types of penalties are fine, especially in a victory. Moreover, the Oilers also eventually got their revenge over Wiesblatt, as Jake Walman laid him out hard in the second period. Pretty physical game all around, as Mattias Ekholm also laid out Luke Evangelista behind the net.
This was Podkolzin’s fourth fight of the season. Hague got the upper hand on the Oiler, granted he has four inches of height over Podkolzin. Of any Oiler, he’s the one that you’d expect to see jump in after a big hit. He did against Ridly Greig earlier this month, as well as when Johnathan Kovacevic hit Connor McDavid on Jan, 20.
In Draisaitl’s absence, the Oilers’ second line consisted of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jason Dickinson, and Jack Roslovic. They were tasked to shut down the Predators’ top line and did a solid job at it. Matthew Savoie played alongside Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman, scoring his 11th goal of the season.
There were three separate instances of players getting hit in the face with the puck in this one, including two Oilers defencemen. Up 2-1, Jake Walman took it to the face right beside the net, one of his two blocked shots. After the empty-netter, Connor Murphy deflected the puck into his face. Both seemed to be alright.
Good stuff from Connor Ingram in this game, as he stopped 27 of 28 shots for a .964 save percentage. The last three goals he’s allowed, dating back to the game-tying goal on Friday, have beaten him off the post and in.
With the win, the Oilers matched the result of the Anaheim Ducks, meaning they are still just two points behind the division leaders. They’ll be back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT, as they host the San Jose Sharks.
